Hello,

Has anyone had an experience with Mille Trophy Room preservation?

I had moths get to one of my Fallow deer. Do not want to see the rest of my trophies lost. Any input is appreciated.

Thank you

Hello
Sorry to hear. Have experienced the same, but so far it haven't developed to the entire "collection".

Problem with this kind of attacks is that one seldom see anything before they've already done damage and it might be difficult to monitor.

As a norwegian using Miller services is very difficult, so I have no experience with them.

But there's other solutions. Freezing is one, preferably in combination with insecticides.

Put the trophy in a plastic bag, and spray with insecticide (not directly on the trophy). Keep it closed for a while. This should kill adult moths and hopefully larvae.
Then you need to freeze it. Wrap in plastic and put it in the freezer.
Keep it there for a few days and then take it out. The next day you repeat this process.
Eggs should be killed, if temp. is under -18-20 degrees Celsius. This is a bit different for various types of moths.

There's always a risk that the infection will travel around in your collection, but like everything else they need something to feed on. And if the taxidermy is done by good professionals it shouldn't be a problem.
Remember that you also need to vacuum clean places were eggs can fall (mostly underneath affected trophies). I did it for the hole trophy room just to be more safe. In all cracks and openings. Throw the dust bag away and buy a new one.

I do clean my trophies once or twice a year, to remove dust that can attract insects. And I spray carefully with insecticides.

This might not be a total solution for you, but something to try out.
It have worked for me so far. You can also get some insect traps (with feromons that attract male adult moths) and try find out how big your problem is.
My traps show no activity so far and it's been two years.

Good luck!

I have used them. The first batch of trophies from South Africa stunk the whole house up with a strong chemical smell and were dropping larva of dermistid horn beetles on the carpet. Needless to say my wife was ready to throw everything out on the front lawn. I tried fumigating them in the crate with Raid fogger with no results. I called Miller Trophy room and they cleaned, killed the bugs, and deodorized my trophies. Probably saved my marriage, too.

I use MTR as well and have been very happy with them. I especially like that they'll protect a collection of any size. They'll do the guy with five trophies or the guy with 500 trophies. The only complaint I have is after they've alerted you they're in your region of the US they're a bit short notice when they show up, "Hey, will be there in 2 days."

I used 20 Mule Team Borax to preserve museum mounted rodent skins & kill bugs.I remember our prof sprinkled borax on the mounted heads & brushed it in to kill bugs.
