well, as I get closer to building the house, I am catching a lot of flack about my trophy room. I am hell bent on having no windows in the room. Everyone I talk to says I'm making a big mistake. So the front of the room, if there were a window there, would face the mountains. I'm at kind of a loss here. Any input would be great.......wapiti7 Dimentions...22x32 12ft walls 16ft ceiling peak

I think you need windows. My small trophy room 18X20 12' apex, has only a set of double wood& glass doors and it's not enough. Yes sunlight will fade them (eventually and you'll probably be gone to the happy hunting grounds by then ) but you can mitigate that with good, anti-UV glass and have your windows facing north/south to avoid direct sunlight. But you need windows....and a fireplace! jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

Put in the windows. Enjoy the room with a view. Not a vault. Perception is reality regardless the truth! Stupid people should not breed DRSS NRA Life Member Owner of USOC Adventure TV

I would agree with jorge. You need windows! Your mounts will be nice to look at, but they are a static display. They are the same every time you look at them. Windows give you a dynamic view. Something is always changing out there. Especially if you have a great view, like the mountain range that you mentioned that you have. A fireplace, like jorge also mentioned, can add alot to a trophy room. A fireplace is a focal point in a room, and one or more large mounts above a fireplace really look great. Like I mentioned in my post on My Room, I probably put too many windows in my trophy room, but with those windows, I have great views to three sides of mountains, deer, turkeys, and sometimes elk in my yard and the fields below me, beautiful sunsets, and the lights of town at night. When I built my trophy room, I thought I was making it big enough. Since then I have made two trips to Africa, and two trips to Canada's Northwest Territories. Now, my 30' x 35' room is not big enough! A couple of things I would change if I were to build again would be probably two less windows on two sides of the room, and I would have at least 4' of wall space above the windows to accomodate deer and impala size animals. Animals above the windows also don't get too much direct sunlight which fades their capes. Build it BIG, bigger than you think you need now, put some windows in, and consider putting in a fireplace. I've seen some great rooms shown here on AR. NRA Endowment Life Member

Hi Wapiti7: Buffy has real good advice. Put some nice windows in and leave space on the top.. THEN have them covered with museum quality film coating. It is the ultra violet light that damages the hides. Take a look at my windows behind my Giraffe that are coated with that special film. I did the two big windows behind the Giraffe and a 4ft square sky light for like $300 bucks installed. Guarnteed no damage due to sunlight! It is a plastic coating that is put on with water, then left to dry. I am telling you this stuff really works. If you want the name brand I can give you the company that installed it. Regards...
