The SCI museum in Tuscon, Arizona has a great display and is definately worth going out on Gates Pass road to see.

Unfortunately the lighting needs a lot more thought. There is a great display of cats that is poorly lit but in other areas some terrific mounts have too much and the wrong kind of light.

Additionally, the facade of the building is a tragic farce - a phony castle. Are we sending a message that we SCI members are a bunch of Phonies?

It is terrific that SCI has done this. Definately go see it.

Hopefully they will someday see fit to get it right.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

The Facade was from a more memorable moment that "Mac" the founder of SCI had in North Africa. I have forgotten the more important details, but perhaps someone will correct me with the specifics. A French foriegn legion post I beleve it was, a definate landmark for the area. While a life member, I have come to see the organization as more the farce than the building which I have been to visit.

I was out there a few years ago, in Tucson. I made it a point to drive out and see it.

Yes! Well worth the trip! Great place to spend a few hours! I have some photo's myself,
I'll have to see if I can dig them up and post a few.

You are correct about the facade. The building is the architect's conception of photos Mac provided of Oom Chalouba (an abandoned French Foreign Legion fort) and Fort Archambalt that he'd visited while hunting in Chad. He thought a North African decor was appropriate for an Arizona desert setting.

It's easy to knock SCI, but try to imagine what it would be like without it Despite what ohter groups are claiming, SCI is the only major organization whose primary purpose is to protect hunting rights and conserve the wildlife we hunt. Without SCI you would not import the leopard, elephant, lion, polar bear, argali, bontebok, and many other trophies you have legallly hunted outside the USA.

Well said Bill but you know as well as anyone that there is a lot of corruption at the top. The goals and mission get done despite, not because of, some of the leadership.

Kudos to the staff who carry on regardless.

That's because the mission is greater than the individuals.

If you are interested in learning more about the SCI museum and how it has been the club's ugly stepchild from day one -- and also how it caused C.J. McElroy to be fired from the club he founded -- you should read my "The History of SCI" released this past January.

When I sat down to write it I vowed to tell the history of Mac and the club as it was without flluff, warts and all. Surprisingly, the two committees that reviewed my book did very little editing.

Incidentally, the big lifesize lion on display in Mac's trophy room at the museum is mine. I shot it while hunting with him in Zambia in 1994.
