Ironwood pedestal mount

Has anyone made a pedestal mount from ironwood? Ironwood seems to be an ideal wood for a pedestal because it's so dense/heavy. Is ironwood hard to get? Would it be a good wood to use for such a project?

Note: wasn't sure where to post this but this looked like a good place.

You could also post it on the Taxidermy board.

Personally, walnut was heavy enough for me if I plan to move things around much. I imaging ironwood could get pretty pricey if it has much figure.

If you are referring to lignum vitae (Guaiacum), it is a protected species. The trade of all species of Guaiacum is controlled under CITES appendix II.

In other words, it will be extremely expensive. There are other species that are sold as "ironwood", but none are as dense and hard as lignum.

There's also a less expensive alternative in desert ironwood, which is used to make the carvings as seen atop the entertainment center in this photo of my family room. It is very dense, heavy and dark. It's available at the link below. -TONY
