I seen a lot of nice trophy mounts on this forum. To me taxidermy is art. I have a few extremely well done mounts. I also have a few that i regret spending time, enegry & $$$ to get them done. Maybe some animals just make better taxidermy subjects???....I've never seen a Cape Buffalo that had that sence of danger look to it. If anyone has a pic of a very good Buff, please post it & your taxidermists info. Thank you. BTW - My next big hunt. If you can't smell his breath, your're not close enough!

BK - I think it is hard to near impossible to capture that "Where's my money..." look, like the ones in the thread on the African Hunting forum with the pictures of the Masailand buffalo. It is almost a sneer, looking down at you. The horns with that big drop really add to the attitude too. Pict's removed 3/24 to free-up my web-space.

Thanks for the idea Boss! And thanks for the pictures Bill. I would really love to see some more pics on this thread and if anybody does have a good "you owe me money" form that their taxidermist used, I would like to know what form they used. All of you taxidermists!!! Here is an opportunity to show off your goods and talent!

Jerry, I love buff No. 2! He does have some attitude. I hope I am not being rude and asking for too much. But could you share what form / form company you used. I will be hopefully bringing my taxidermist here in Ga some business following my trip in August.

Did you look at the thread about 3-4 below this one about mounting my caribou? I put a link there to a photo of a cape buffalo mount I did for a client. It's not looking at the viewer but at a stick he got hung on a horn. I still think he had "the look", though. Here's the link: Cape buffalo Good luck! JDS - Excellent work!!! I like the way you worked that branch in the mount. There's a lot of life in your work. Did you use a 1/2 form or is that a shoulder form? If you can't smell his breath, your're not close enough!

Thanks for the kind words! The mount was done on a shoulder form. Precision Mannikins used to sell the form but they were bought out by McKenzie Supply. I think Jonas Supply also has a similar form. Take care! JDS And so if you meet a hunter who has been to Africa, and he tells you what he has seen and done, watch his eyes as he talks. For they will not see you. Having recently watched on The History Channel a Modern Marvels episode describing Taxidermy, I would imagine that Freeze Dried Taxidermy could be a fantastic way to get any pose you would want from a mount. As far as I know it is only performed in the US, so getting a buffalo head back here would be a major obstacle. The following link shows what can be done to peoples pets and fish trophies (not my cup of tea for the pets mind). http://showcase.netins.net/web/helling/at/petgal1.htm here is some blurb on the process: http://showcase.netins.net/web/helling/at/facts.html If I get a nice Russian Boar this year, I will enquire as to getting the whole head done this way, or if possible the whole hog. Never use a cat's arse to hold a tea-towel.

JDS, that mount is just amazing. I think it's a keeper! Dave "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value." -Thomas Paine, "American Crisis"

Excellant mouints Jerry. Good taxidermy lasts a lifetime and you will enjoy looking at it forever. "cheap" taxidermy usually gets moved to the garage or thrown out as you start to hate even looking at it anymore. Good taxidermy is worth paying extra for. I have a system: I pretend to work and they pretend to pay me!

The current issue of Sports Afield has a great photo of a Cape Buffalo on the cover that might could be used as "go by" for the taxidermist. I tend to think that the actual hunt would far outweigh the mount in the case of Cape buffalo - and I want to smack one badly. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.
