Folks this is my daughter with the first fish of her life. She is just 2 1/2 years old and spends hours on my lap while I read hunting and fishing stories to her. We talk all the time about when she grows up and can go on trips with me, she is always excited by the thought of this.

Well last Saturday morning when I came home from work ( I work third shift so I can have more day time with the kids) she met me at the door and said " Daddy can we go fishin today?" well it had been a long week and I was pretty worn out but then I thought "this is exactly why I chose to work the late shift" I said " you bet we can go fishing" and I picked a spot with a nice level bank and set up with a bobber and worm rig.

Cora spent a fair amount of time wandering around and tossing rocks and generly having a good ole time .. until I said " hey you got a bite" then she became "all business" she picked up "her" rod and (with a litlle help from me) set the hook .

This might be only a perch ( and small perch at that) but it is a FAR better trophy to me than all the trout salmon and bass ( and big game too!) combined that I have caught over the years.

And best of all on the way home she said " Daddy can we go huntin tomorrow?" Yes she is growing up to be my new outdoor buddy and I couldn't be happier, Now to work on her little brother we can make this a whole family affair !!

Nice picture, I am very glad my dad took pictures of all my kills/catches, even the smaller animals- this will be a very precious memory one day!

Congrats.

We just had our first 6 weeks ago. I can't wait to get her out with me. Your story is what I think about everyday.

Tom,

Great Story and a beautiful little girl.
I can't wait until my little girl is old enough to go fishing(then hunting) with her Dad. she is 18 months old now.
My son and I are headed to Namibia next summer, he is 14.
I really cherish the time I get to spend outdoors with my kids, so I could really understand and almost hear the excitement and joy in your voice as you told this story.

Tom,

That is an absolutely beautiful story. I have a 13 month-old son that I dream of doing the exact same thing with one day.

Then I can teach him how to shoot starlings and blue jays. Hee hee.

Great pic!

I am suspicious though! My kids first fish usually ended up with the rod 20 feet away from the shoreline!

Hope you're making it your desktop pic at work!

Thanks for the kind words guys.NOTHING I have ever done in the outdoors was as much fun as that morning ! The best part is she had a blast too! She was askign how long before we go again on the way home. I am making this a very regular occurance once or twice a week for 30- 60 minutes ( short atention span at 2!). And yes It certainly is my wallpaper and screen saver for all four of my monitors at work. Ya know I feel kind of sorry for those that don't have kids toshare these things with.
