Hi Mark
exelent display just 1 question on your wildebees display the horns next to your blackwildebeest looks bigger than your shoulder mount blue wildebeest. why did you not shoulder mount that one.
It looks like its more than 28" and the black wildebeest is also an exceptional tropy what did it measure

375 fanatic,

The wildebeest display covers four different species and as you noticed there is a very nice blue wildebeest there in a Euro mount. The shoulder mount of the blue was from my first safari and like a novice I wanted to mount everything as I probably would never go back (RIGHT!) The black is a nice one but at this time I can't remember its score.

Very nice Mark! And not to "date" either of us, do you have a source for the lava lamp? That is the way to do a hippo.

Shaun,

I really do think this is the only way to do a hippo. A shoulder mount is big and very expensive and they mostly look unatural to me.

I gave one very similiar to this one to a friend who has it on a turn table set on his coffee table in the living room. Conversation piece???

Very nicely done!!!!!!!!!

? Can you put a sealant on the hippo skull to prevent it from falling apart over the years. I love the way you had it done.

I like the wildebeest display. I have 3 out of 4 so far. All I need is the cook's. And like you, I mounted eveything on my frist safari. When I think about it I have had everything mounted since then too, except for one impala(european). I am waiting on my buff from Tanzania last year, nyssa wildebeest, impala and Zebra. I am getting the Zebra on a pedastal becasue my hartmans is a rug. Going back in June to Namibia to take my dad for the first time. Cant wait!

Congrats on all of your hunting success!

KUDUBULL

Thanks! I don't know about the sealant for the hippo but the brain cavity is messed up because of the 300 grain soft point that hit it. Kind of shattered that area. The rest has really dried out having it outdoors here in dry Wyoming.

The wildebeest I need is the Nyasa. So far I can't justify a safari to the Selous just to get one.

Have fun with your Dad.

Blair,

Thanks! Everybody seems to like that leopard. Doing them that way was much cheaper than other life size mounts with enviroment and we can move it around as we see fit.

I'm kind of anxious to get the Lord Derby myself. It definitely will be a prominent part of the collection.

RM700,

The Kafue lechwe pictured is right at 30". That sneak mount is also one of my favorite mounts. I wasn't sure Atcheson's could capture the way the lechwe run with their heads down but I think they got it.

Dennis,

It was not by choice. I shot the sitatunga in 2000 in Zambia and the hunting closed for a couple of years following that. My safari operator had done some creative license purchases that I was not aware of and it caused the hold up of my trophies. I got the trophies from the Luangwa Valley released within a year but the trophies from the Bangweulu swamp actually were held up until last year. Seems the salt used in the swamp was contaminated and the capes were rotten beyond repair. I nearly wept. Both the sitatunga and black lechwe are very good at 29" and 26" respectively and the capes were excellent when they were killed.

Dennis.

I think if you hunt Africa long enough you will run into some trophy handling/shipping problems. I did get my trophies back eventhough it took 6 years and I'm glad for that.

Your right. If it was a kudu or a gemsbok I'd have a cape already and mounts done. With the sitatunga and black lechwe being less than common the chances are about zero of securing a cape.

Perhaps a silly question - but how can you tell which wildebeast subspecies you're looking at just from a skull mount?

The black is easy, but to be honest the rest all kind of look the same.

Thanks.

I shot them so I know which is which. To me the blue and Cookson's horn configurations seem very similiar but the white bearded is definitely smaller and has more drop. The 3 euro mounted wildebeeste are blue L, Cookson's TOP and white bearded R.
