I know several of you have played with making slugs. I pickup a Lee mold and I have a few questions. 1. Can these be shot out of a smooth bore with any amount of accuracy. 2.Has anybody used any of the surplus powders in shotgun (slug) loads. 3.Type of hulls/wads being used.

Ohshooter, have used mostly HS6 with Lee 1 oz moulds, and get pie plate accuracy at 50 yards. Have used once fired AA and new primed Fiochi. I got the Fiochi from Ballistic Products purposely because they are clear, and I can see my slug or buckshot loaded inside. Assemble per any load book. I do use a felt wad over the slug while seating to keep from deforming it it, but then remove it (the felt wad). sundog

I use winAA hulls, have used brenneke hulls too.

I switched over to a roll crimp and have better accuracy than star crimped, I have an old roll crimper that I took the die out of and mounted in a drill press, works well.

I use the Lee 7/8 oz slug in AA hulls; load data recommended WAA12 (white) wads but I've ended up using WAA12L (gray) with NM-04 (a PB-like surplus powder). Got good groups with HS-6 as well (clover-leafs at 30 yds out of a skeet barrel) but my decrepit body complains too easily. Even my wife does well with the lighter slug loads and doesn't complain.

Has anyone used round ball in the 12 bores? I've considered this for some time, although I've not shot a cartridge smoothbore in years. I know in a 20 bore flinter, they will shoot up with muzzle loading rifles to about 80+ yards. Once you get to this bore size is where I start recommending pure lead, rather than ww hardness for round ball.

Waksupi,
I use patched .690 RB's in my BP shotgun and I put them in a wad for my 12 Ga pump. They are OK out to about 40 yds. I have used ones made of WW's and didn't see much difference. Orygun

Waksupi, I shoot pure lead .735 RBs in a Greener Police Special I had rifled. I roll the balls in Liquid Alox. Got my data from a long ago Gil Sengel article in Handloader. The ball weighs about 1 3/8 oz and the mv is about 1400 fps.

Groups generally run 3-4 inches at 50 yards with iron sights. Part of that is me since the rig kicks so hard my shooting buddies have dubbed it "Attilla the Gun".
