I have some 145 gr. cast bullets I once bought and would like to load them in my newer production rifle. They are lubricated and have gas checks on them already. What I need to know is if they load the same as conventional bullets and regular dies? The loads i have show about say 9 grains of 700x, do I need to put anything in with this load to hold the powder against the primer? Perhaps a filler of some sort as I would expect alot of empty space? My objective is to load a very quiet small game load for around the cottage. Sub sonic would be ideal if it could be done. Any data would be appreciated.

Yes though you may want to flare the neck with a Lyman "M" die to make it easier to seat the softer cast bullets. They may work just fine with the gas checks and not shave lead with careful placement in the neck. Crimping with a Lee Crimp Die may help with more consistent ignition of reduced loads. Some folks like to use Dacron or other filler but I do not if I can avoid it. As to whether your load needs one I would experiment first to see if it makes a difference at the range. I have not used 700X in a 6.5x55 but in the .30-30 I noticed no position sensitivity with light loads. The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. -- Thomas Jefferson http://tcbunch.com

Since you are just experimenting, you can skip the Lyman "M" die for now, although it is well worth having if you will be loading cast on a steady basis. Almost any handy tapered metal object will do to flare the case mouth. Such things as a large center punch, a pulled .50 BMG bullet, and a worn lathe center have worked for me. The Lee Universal Expander is a tool worth having on every cast bullet shooter's bench. It does not do as good a job as a caliber specific "M" die, but it will bell anything I have run across. Nine grains of 700X is not going to be anywhere close to subsonic. Five or six is going to be more like it. If you have other fast pistol powders around, try them as well in the same doses. Pressures are so low that you are not going to get in trouble with that amount of Unique or anything faster than Unique. We've been getting great reports on Trail Boss, if you have any of that. It's another very fast pistol powder, but much bulkier for the same weight which helps fill cases better. I'm chary of fillers. They help in some loads, but there is a slight risk of chamber ringing. I use them in some loads, but not in anything expensive or irreplaceable. I'll gamble a hundred dollar Handi barrel, or that of a milsurp Mauser I'll eventually rebarrel anyway, but I don't do it in the rifles I cherish. It is a good citizen's duty to love the country and hate the gubmint.
