Yea, I know, I should be over on the gunsmith board, but cast boolit shooters are smart. Does the riser on the Lyman 90 MJT fit the 57 series? IOW, is the inlet on the block the same width and shape and is the screw size the same??? This is on topic, because if it does I can get one for my RI 03 for high power - cast boolits, of course. I need a little more elevation, and I think this would do the trick. Gonna call Lyman in the morning, but that's a crap shoot talkin' to them sometimes. Nice added advantage if this works is that the 90 MJT has target knobs. sundog

......Sundog, I don't have a Ly #57 to compare to. All my others are Redfield, Williams, or those 2 wierd steel Lymans that LOOK similar to #57's but were designed for left hand Mossberg target 22's. I don't know how they relate. FWIW the vertical arms on these are a dovetail fit into the block. What I can do is supply dimensions to the 90MJT.

The total width of the arm in the block is .627". The arm isn't a bevel, or dovetail fit into the block but is stepped. The width of the step on the arm is .561". The thickness of the arm is .123". Hope this helps, and you can make out my meaning!

Hey Buckshot, ole buddy, thanks. The 57 I have installed is a very good sight - very good. It's one of the old ones made of steel and the box was marked $8.50 or something like that. The front globe was like 3.75. Premember them???

Anyway, the rear is stepped, just like you said. The widest measure is .630, and the step is .565/6.

Of course, my other option, and maybe the better, is a shorter front sight. The barrel bands for the 03s have a very deep dovetail and require an appropriately cut base to fit, so if I can find a globe with a shorter base, I'll be in fat city. BUT, who makes them??? I wonder if the heathens have trouble finding parts like we do? sundog

Sundog:

The only MJT's I have seen mount on the left; 57SME mounts on the right... you would have to reverse the aperture carrier in the MJT gallows arm, but that should not be difficult. You might do yourself a favor and find a Redfield No. 70 on ebay. For some reason, they do not command the outlandish prices that the Lyman's do, and it's better sight. Of course if you can luck into a Lyman 48, so much the better... but they seem to be priced off the 'scope these days.

Solving the front sight issue ... Lyman made a No. 17 that fit the dovetail of the 03, and one that replaced the entire 03A3 front sight assembly. Both are too high even for full-power jacketed loads. What I have done on two of my 03's is to buy an 03A3 front sight base, and mill, cut or file a standard 3/8" dovetail as low as you can. Install this base on the 03: you will have to drill or file a notch in the 03 spline to line up with the pin hole in the 03A3 base. Now install the lowest Lyman 17 front sight (17 AHB) with the standard 3/8" dovetail. The 17 is still made and Brownell's carries them. If you use an aperture rather than a post, IXL Enterprises makes a set of apertures that will fit the Lyman 17 in sizes that are actually useful on modern targets (Brownell's number 100-000-325, $20.00). Only the largest aperture supplied by Lyman is useable on high power targets, and then only if you have above-average vision and are not prone to eye fatigue. It's just too small for most of us. You could also use the lowest Redfield #60 series globe sight if you can find one. Tunnel is a bit larger, but they have not been made in years.

I'm having a barrel of fun shooting my 03's and 03A3's with cast, have been doing it for nearly 40 years. Nice to hear someone else is of the same mind.

Resp'y,
Bob S.
