If you look at the directions I posted on another thread you'll note the leading edge of the rod is wrapped with tape to center the rod and keep it off the bore. If the rod is well under dia I wrap/coat the whole rod. Then the wad of tissue/toweling of wood fiber forms another barrier to protect the bore-- placed between the slug being compressed and the rod's leading edge.

What I will clarify in those instructs is how I hold the rod near the crown area to center it. And that area of the rod too is wrapped with tape to prevent steel on steel contact.
