In the picture here the cartridge that needs identified is the loaded one on the right. The casing on the left is an Austrian 8x56R. The measurements I got on the loaded round are: rim is .623, just ahead of the rim is .532, and as close as I can get on the fattest part of the bullet is .430. Is it a 43 Spanish? Joe

Well I've since pulled a bullet. It measures .407 on the portion that goes in the case neck. There is a wad of looks like some kind of fiber almost like kapok but heavier. The powder is kind of a brown color and squarish grains. It's weird that the bullet has a flange on it that rests against the case mouth and that is the part that I measured the first time that was .430. Joe

It is not a .43 Spanish, but appears to be a 10.4mm Italian Vetterli. The case should be about 1.87" long. WC

Joe. A picture of the headstamp if any might help. I've got a couple of books that may have your answer. It's a berdan primed case, Right?...Geo

I'll vote for the 10.4x47Rmm Italian Vetterli M70 also. What does the bullet weigh? 313gns? It says it was adopted in 1870 and may hve been loaded with a brass coated bullet. May have been loaded with 62gns Fg. What is the case length?

I agree with WildcatCrazy and Lar45. This is an Italian 10,35x47 R Vetterli. The FMJ jacket bullet indicate a M 1890 cartridge; this was loaded with Ballistite, not with black powder. Regards, Carcano
