Recoil is only momentary but gravity is constant. You've no idea the difference a kind word makes. When we walk to the edge of all the light we have, and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on, or we will be taught to fly. Patrick Overton Churchill to Cabinet in May 1940 on fight with Germany: "We shall go on and we shall fight it out, here or elsewhere, and if at last the long story is to end, it were better it should end, not through surrender, but only when we are rolling senseless on the ground." "France has neither winter nor summer nor morals. Apart from these drawbacks it is a fine country. France has usually been governed by prostitutes." ---Mark Twain

"Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction." "I hear it said that West Berlin is militarily untenable as so was Bastogne, and so, in fact, was Stalingrad. Any danger spot is tenable if men brave men will make it so." John F Kennedy "Only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility I welcome it." John F. Kennedy

D.E., It's poli-TICS, not Ticks. A tic is an uncontrolled jerk. Ergo, it would be "Poly, meaning many; and Tics, meaning uncontrolled jerks. Wouldn't that be just about as accurate?
