Steve Brook is finalizing a mould for me for my 500 Jeffery.

He would like to make a .512 bullet and have me size it to .511 for my rifle. I can't seem to find a Lyman sizing die that will do this. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this? Could I ream out a. 509? or are there other things I can do?

"Sounds good steve. The only problem I'm having is Lyman makes a .512 sizing die and a .509. But they don't do a .511. Any suggestions on how I can get one or who can make one...?

Lee will do custom sizes for the push through size dies.
Mountain Molds used to make size dies that would fit the Lyman or RCBS. I don't know if he still does or not.

As long as you don't run into a tight neck situation with the .512 boolits and they chamber, I would think that the .512" size die would be just fine.

I've cast and sized .512" bullets for guys shooting the 500 NE and they said they shot great with no leading.(water dropped Wheel Weights and 50-50 Lino-WW)

Use a .512 die and be happy. I have loaded bullet as large as .462 and fired them out of .45-70s just because I didn't want to fool with a .460 die . You are only talking about .001 extra with a lead bullet and that might be a better deal.

However if you just have to have a .511 Buffalo Arms has them for $44.95.

I have considered this.

I think I found .512 Lyman and .510 Lee available off the shelf.

I will order a custom .511 from Lee.

If you want to Lube&Size&Gas-Check with a Lyman or RCBS "Lube-Sizer-Gas-Checker" of .512" that is fine.

I have no experience with ordering Lyman or RCBS custom sizers.

I do have experience with the Lee custom sizing dies. I ordered .405, .400, .397, .396, .395, and .394 in one swoop and it was excellent. IIRC, it was only about $30 for each size.

The simplest thing would be to order a Lee .511" and go to town. You could then use either Lee Liquid Alox or the stick lubes.

You can stand the as-cast bullets in melted stick lube in a cast iron skillet on the kitchen stove. Let it cool, and then use a cut-off .416 Rigby or 460 Wby case as a cookie cutter to extract the lubed bullets from the frying pan.

Then place the gas check on the base and push it through the Lee die nose first, setting the gas check in the process.

The Lee dies fit in any reloading press with 7/8"x14TPI threads.

If you do a Lyman or RCBS custom sizer, you will need a nose punch too, and that will be more expensive.

I have yet to try the Lee Liquid Alox instead of the stiff and sticky stick lubes. Some rave about it, and it would indeed be a lot easier.

What has not been mentioned is that the size of production dies is NOMINAL, and depending upon your sizing technique and the alloy being sized, any right on the money bullet diameter that comes out is purely chance.

Hey, good thought, better measure the products off the shelf first!

I have the ".512 Nominal" Lyman setup. Will Lube-size-gas-check with that, and then measure: Could be .5115 to .5125 or even farther off?

Then pass it through my ".510 Nominal" Lee sizer ... could possibly turn out .511" from that ... or I will get a .511 custom made by Lee.

That would be the easiest way for me to go with what I have.

Ought to shoot them for results, whatever diameter, .510 to .512, surely that window should be best, eh?

Lead bullets should be at very least groove diameter. .001 oversize compared to the groove dia is standard practice though on a large obre I can;t see where .002 or .003 would hurt anything as long as the case will chamber freely before being fired..

Buckshot over on the Castboolit forum will make you one for a Lyman/RCBS style sizer. May not get it fast, but it will be made well and a fair price.
