Instead of pickin up a 22RF field pistol, already got a couple long barreled target 22s, I just loaded down a 9mm Mak to about 500+fps with a 92 grn cast boolit. Makes for a great small game finisher, "on" at 10-20ft, with less noise than a cap gun. Holster holds an extra clip of full-power stuff for 2-legged varmits coming up from Mejico or across the Rio Colorado from Kalifornistan.

Anybody else who will admit to using a loaded down cast boolit pistola as a field pistola. Case this doesn't work out in the long run, any recs. on a 22 rf field pistol. Saw an ole Hi-Standard Sport King at a great price recently, but was afraid it might have problemas. Don't want to spend the $$$ for a new short barreled Ruger or Browning. Thank You, Kid jethrow

Galena--

Been there/done that with 32 ACP, 32 SWL/Magnum, and 380 ACP. Mostly, the stutterguns turn into slide actions--but the wheelguns do all right at 550-600 FPS. The revolvers are appreciably louder than the bottom-feeders at a given velocity range, too.

Kid,

You can't do better than a High Standard. A buddy of mine that says it has seen way more than 20k rounds and it's just like a timex. It just keeps on hitting. I've got a couple and they're not for sale, just too nice. Im talking about the real high standard not the Texas kind.

Galena Kid, AKA Jethrow Strait?

43 Mauser to pip squeek Maks. You're all over the place.

I tried to send you an e-mail on 090703, no answer, have you changed your e-address? Mine's the same drop me a line when you get a chance.

Haven't tried any pip squeek rounds in pistols. Actually in my personal shooting I don't really have much use for pistols (Where have I heard that before?) I like my long guns.

A few weeks ago I fooled around with Lee's 309-120-R and some Hornady 90 grain 314 cal swaged bullets in my Model 94 30-30 at 1000 fps.

The Hornadys had to be sized to .311 and coated with liquid alox after I found the dry lube that came on them did not work in this application.

Both of the above loads shot better than minute of jack rabbit at 50yds.

I'm partial to the Lee bullet as I can make it myself and I don't like the exposed Liquid Alox needed on the Hornady bullets for actual field use.

When the weather cools off a bit more I'll try to make it in to 3-Points for another shoot with the Galenaholics.

Have Fun, JCherry

Thanks much, Al and Mike!

Al, for the use I have for it, a quiet slide action seems perfect. Being as I'm so darn cheap, it will save me ten minutes of groping through the grass and brush for the casing every time I use it. Nonetheless, your suggestion of a revolver for it's repeater value makes sense. Only thang I have handy that would qualify(weight and size)is a 44 Bulldog, and that seems like overkill even at 500fps.

Mike, I think you may have nudged me across the line on that Hi Standard, if it's still available. Even though it appears to have been little used, I've heard that magazines and feeding were sometimes a problem with HSs. Dunno, probably should just jump for it at half the price of a Ruger or Browning; 'sides it aint real money anyway, just consignment dollars burnin a hole in my poket. ---kid---

galena,

My HS Victor was real persnickety about which magazines would feed well, but I thought the Sport King was OK.

If you want a neat field 22 get the S&W model 41 with the 5" barrel. I've had a LOT of fun with that one. [Big Grin]

JMHO,

kid, a couple inexpensive (ie, under $200) .22s to consider are the old Colt Woodsman and the newer Heritage Arms Rough Rider. Both are pretty accurate and easy to haul around for those pesky lizards that always want to attack unwary desert wanderers.

JC, wanted to reply immediately since I definitely didn't do so with your email of a few days ago on the 11mm Mauser. I really had been trying to think up something half intelligent to say being as it's been a wall-hanger since last we talked. Does this mean you've cooled down on the Krag; seemed like you had left the 11mm in it's dust at that time.

Dang, this early retirement is tough, got so many projects going don't know where I'm at half the time, but do know I'm one happy kid! BTW the hardcore "Galenaholics" are these days hanging out a the TRC range Monday and Thursday mornins, should you sometime be able to join in the festivities. kid jethrow

Dang, can't get out of cyberspace today! Every time I try to get off this thread somebody adds an insightful post or two.

C1PNR, thanks. You obviously read my mind, and put me at ease about getting the Sport King.

Grumble, been lookin at a couple of Woodsman, but they are over two hun and have 6" tubes. Also there's this super-light Beretta with a 4" plus barrel, called a Model 101. Couldn't find any info on it in my books or on the web. I will have to give those old Colts one last lookover!

Thanks, kid

"those pesky lizards that always want to attack unwary desert wanderers."

We always called em baby alligator's!!

Waisted a many day and a many a pound of lead in pursuit of them rascals back in the good ole days, alot of that time was spent in that same country Jethro call's home.

In those days my favorite small game load was two .360 round balls in a .38 special case fired in a Mod.27. Slowpoke

OK then, how's this:

I got a little no-name 38 S&W revolver made in the early 1900s for about $30. Thanks to some advice from folks on Shooters, it is now a dandy little snake gun. I sanded out the 2" barrel until the rifling was still visable, but not exactly useful. Took out the headspacing ridge in each of the five cylinder holes so a 357 Mag case would slide in.

Loaded up 1.5gr Bullseye to push 1.5cc (Lee scoop) of #6 shot. Used a .32 GC overpowder and a .35 GC overshot, and crimped it all together.

It's tough on snakes and chipmunks out to about five steps. At six steps, I doubt the shot would go through toilet paper. <G> It makes a nice little pattern, though.

Slowpoke, My game with those little buggers was to try to trap them with snares made from a piece of weed. They'd always break loose before I could catch 'em and cook 'em <G>, but it was a good way to learn the game.

As a kid, they were great BB gun targets.

I'm always torn between my 4.5" Sport Model Woodsman ($200, Grumble? Haw!) and the Colt Gold Cup loaded with target loads. I guess the .45 is the most practical as it is a great bunny getter and with the same load easily clips willow branches for fishing fly retreival. (Hint: line up the sights along the branch, so that elevation drops out of the fire control problem.) curmudgeon

They're out there, Curmudgeon. I've got two of them. Not collector quality, but still good pistols. One is missing the little button to disassemble the slide so I have to use a small screwdriver (which works better than the factory button), and the other had some holes drilled in the triggerguard, which I plugged. Both function well and shoot good, which is what I like in a field gun.
