Thanks

You are testing these .22 bullets for hardness aren't you Joe?

Bullets seem to have stabilized...they are still at .2273. One day over a week from casting them. I'll continue to monitor them.

so six day's for the growth to stabilize it looks like.
i'd still say a month for the hardnes to be anywhere close to where it's gonna get.
and close to 6 months for full stabilization.
i would be comfortable shooting them after a month just to see how things go.
i cast a batch of boolits today i don't plan on shooting untill next winter.
i'm still waiting for my 223 mold to be cut,the cherry should be here by friday.

Well at 6-7 days let's just say the growth has slowed down a lot.

I read your post in the CU thread on CB about 4831 powder. I can speak for a few of us that we've never had great success with 4831. Let me explain, I'm talking about the CURRENT 4831 from Hodgdon. The powder is just not the same as the old 4831 from years ago. I have trouble getting it to burn completely with low SD's unless I use a booster with it. This includes a long barrel.

My goal is the same as yours wanting a bullet that will expand. That's why I use the 50/50 alloy. I believe it to be hard to make a bullet tougher without making it harder, but we will see with this CU alloy.

i still have a couple lbs of old milsurp 4831.
and i will agree the new stuff is not anything like it at all.
i just needed something to get started with and it was either use the newish 4831-sc that really isn't good at anything,
or try some of my Rl-19 which is good in everything i have.

i'm kicking the kkicker around a bit [lame pun]
i'm thinkng something like 5 grs of 800-x or steel powder burn area type powder just for the fluffyness and gentle pressure rise.

i could up the neck tension a little too,i'm only using .001 right now and the interference fit in the leade to bump the pressure up.

i'm considering trying a mag primer just to what happens..
shrug.

I agree the new 4831 is not good for much. It's okay in jacketed loads. You may try some RL-22 too.

Well I guess the effort to reinvent the wheel, in this case a better cast bullet alloy, had been a total flop. The attempt I made resulted in unsatisfactory bullet and I do believe I'll either just shoot them up in my 22 Hornet or relegate them back to the melting pot. Not much, if nothing at all, is being said about it on the castknowitall.com forum.
