Paper Cup Bullet Seating

Does anyone else seat cast bullets like this?

This works particularly well for smaller calibers - it holds the bullet tight enough for magazine use.

This is a hornet bullet seated this way.

The hornet bullet and case neck gets dipped into molten 'waxy-lube' which soaks into the cup. The trick is to hold it in the 'waxy-lube just long enough to soak to the base of the bullet. The neck is unsized of course. I cannot use this method with my 303 Brit bullet because the bullet is so big there is no room for the paper cup but for a 'normally' dimensioned bullet it would work - with or without lube dipping. Dipping seals the case and of course carries lube. With jacketed bullets, it keeps the bore clean and free of copper fouling.

(In the hornet, this technique allows for a much higher cartridge performance with the use of Lil'Gun without the penalty of higher pressure but only with heavier bullets - for consistant burning of the powder! With other hornet powders, there is little or no difference).

wicked idea for seating paper cups. Is that a die you made just for doing that? or is it from you lube and sizer?
My self have been thinking about looking into making paper patches for my cast lead. But I Have yet to sit down to do any research.

Yes it is. I have just tried loading some 303 Brit cast with that idea and so long as I get the neck size just right, the bullet goes into the paper cup. I have loaded up a few rounds for testing (I fired one into my 'test tube' and it seemed fine). These are not wimpy loads - primer flattening indicates about starting to mid-range pressure. No bullet base deformation and no flame cutting. I havn't checked for leading yet but the gas check showed only a little lead and there is no visible smearing on the recovered bullet - which is pretty well expanded!

You can imagine that cases will last forever! (And they do!)

Cool!

What about accuracy?

Accuracy with plain based cast bullets in particular.

Looking for something that will do 1" at 100yds.

Either ctg or breech seated.

Have .458WM, 45-70, .375Win and H&H as candidates. Soon 7tcu.

Ah well... the hornet produces accuracy beyond what its rust damaged bore gave me hope for - pretty good! The paper cup seating allowed me to raise the velocity quite a bit with Lil'Gun. But I haven't tried it much with cast bullets in the 303 Brit - yet. I started trials with firing into my 'test tube' - that's just a steel device that I can fire into in my shed without my neighbours knowing. It 'clangs' a bit when the lid pops off with 303 rounds. I shall be loading up a few test loads with a bullet and charge that has worked before and then we'll see! I'll keep you posted.

The 'Test Tube'.

You fill this bad boy with water or a type of sand?
I found a website to make my own gel media for testing. I can send you the link if you wish. Its really just Knox Gelatin.

It has rolled carpeting for sound absorbtion and a high tensile steel pot at the bottom with damp sand and the hollow is filled with wool waste and rags. Some of the expanded bullets I have shown stopped before the sand but the slower ones make it right into the sand. It is made up of segments because that's what I could get. The segments have mating steps machined into them so they stay together - they're also high tensile carbon steel. I've had lots of fun with this thing. Smiler

I would appreciate that link for gel media, thanks.
