Now that I am getting into shooting BP cartridges I am about to order a mould for .45-120. While I'm at it I thought I would get one for 300gn .454Casull ammo. For the rifle bullets I won't be making up any kind of fancy mix, I rekon I'll try just plain wheel weights with no additions. Only thing is, I doubt that lead be hard enough for the .454 bullets, would it? And I assume I'll beed to gas check those? If I need to harden the mix wheel weight lead, which I can get plenty of, what should I use? If anyone can give a recipe I would be gratefull.

I shoot straight WW in mine H110-30gr-300gr wfngc-1330fps,or you can shoot water dropped/WW plenty hard. Sean

Thanks, but could you explain the water dropped part? Do you drop the slugs into water after straight after opening the mould or it is something else?

Yes ,as soon as the sprue hardens you drop it in a water bucket (12"deep) cold water, this hardens the bullet like water quenching knifes. This can double the hardness of straight WW. Sean

Water dropped wheel weights. my 454 shoots plain base bullets well also. I use a sponge, weighted on one side, and set in a 5gal bucket of water. After cutting the sprue, I open the molds and drop the bullets onto the sponge, this slows them down so they don't get dings from being too soft when they hit the bottom of the bucket. I also shoot water dropped wheel weights to 2150 out of the 470NE without any problems. I have some Linotype, but it just sits in a bucket gathering dust.
