sundog,
Do you shoot the full 600 yards at your matches or reduced course? What is the velocity with your loads?
We only shot at 100 yards yesterday so I was using a very low velocity load of 1380 fps. Next month the range will be at 200 yards, so I was thinking (always very dangerous [Big Grin] )I'd better increase the velocity to 1600 or 1700 fps to keep from running out of elevation [Wink] and windage if it's blowing. -JDL

JDL, reduced course, shooters choice, 100 or 200. I've been shooting 100 this year due to the sights. I prefer 200, but won't be able to get back to that until I do some sight work this winter. Right now, I like the front sight as is and cannot find a taller riser for the rear, soooo, gotta go with what I've got. I'm shooting the 308-165-SIL (172 gr checked and lubed) over 22.0 N120 (could just as well be any of the 4227 flavors) for about 1700 fps. A shooting buddy who hasn't shot HP with us for awhile used to shoot the 311291 over either 16 or 18 gr AA9 at 200 and consistently shot Expert. It's not really all that hard, and it's a whole lot of fun! And the ammo is CHEAP! sundog

sundog,

Just curious. What size is the target you shoot at 200 yards? And what type of score/hits does one have to accomplish to be "Expert". I rattle a 5.5"x11" steel pendulem at 200 yards with much consistency at my shooting bench with several cast bullet loads. Don't shoot any competitive events so I really don't know much about the targets. Thanks...BCB

BCB,
Hope you don't mind if I butt in.
The 200 yard stage 1 (offhand) target has the 9 and 10 ring black and measures 13", the 10 ring 7".

Stage 2 (sitting rapid fire) is same.

Stage 3 (prone rapid fire) simulates 300 yard target. Black is 10-8 rings 12 5/8" diameter, 10 ring 4 9/16".

Stage 4 (prone slow fire) simulates 600 yard target. Black is 10-7 rings 12" diameter, 10 ring 3 13/16".
The 100 yard targets are smaller, not quite 1/2 the diameters.

JDL, y'all beat me to the draw while I was starting a new thread about Lyman sights. The high power tragets are set up so that whatever range you shoot, they appear to be about the same size bull. The best thing about shooting longer distances is having to be able to read wind. sundog
