I have $50 30/30 and I like to shoot cast with it,however I don't want to spend $100 for a Lyman mould so we are talking Lee. I like heavy bullets but the 170 can not be crimped in the crimp groove it will make it to long to go through the mag. So the question: will the neck tention alone hold the 170 in a tubular mag.or do I have to go to the 150 and be able to crimp? Regards Martin

With cast bullets I crimp where ever I need to. My 170FP Lee crimps in the right spot to feed in my Marlin 336.

Martin, the Lee Factory Crimp Die is exactly what you need. It will crimp either FLGC or cast boolits anywhere along the length. As Mark says, with a lead boolit, just about any seating/crimping die will be able to adequately swage a caseneck into the wall of any cast boolit; just be careful to not overcrimp and crush the brass.

Thanks for the repl. gents I had a old 7mm Lee crimp die and converted it to a 30/30 yesterday, but the nose of the 170 is .012" smaller then the driving bands and inorder to get the right cart.lenght the case mouth is on the nose section and therefore has to be crimped more than say .015" and that is a lot of deformation. Not to mention that the bullet has to push this back as it passes trough and maybe deforming it self. The bullet is so long it's base has passed the neck and if you don't crimp I wonder if the last cart. that went trough the mag. will still have the same overall lenght ? Regards Martin

Could your case length be too long? My lee cast bullets have the crimp groove spot on for my '94 Winchester.

John,Grumble,Mark,I think I got it solved it is rather embarasing. Some time back I bought a .30 Cal. Lee mould and made a 416 400 gr GC mould outof it. Before I converted it I did cast a couple of hundered bullets with it,but not before I put a metplat in the mould. Just a short time ago I got this 94 and loaded these bullets for it,I loaded them long and fed them single because of the above findings. I don't have the box or the mould anymore and just the flatnosed bullets and I assumed them to be the 170 's. Just now when John mentioned that he can crimp in the right place for his 94 (not knowing if Marks Marlin is the same as a 94)a light came on and I weighed a few of them and low and behold they weigh 195 gr. So now it makes sence I bought the longest bullet for the mould conversion and the I put the flat nose on it so I could use it in a tubular mag. I did order a 170 mould today and I am sure all is going to be OK. Thanks gents for your help I am sorry for waisting your time on something stupid like this Merry Christmas Martin

Martin@Hin, My marlin should feed the same as the Win. Don't be embarrassed as we all do things like this once in a while. As long as we learn by our mistakes it's no big deal. I like to think I am perfect but as I get older I found out I am really just a liitle above normal if that. The Marlin 35 Rem however is short throated. Mark

Unlike O-Mark, I really AM perfect. My problem is that reality keeps changing around me, such that when I do something perfect, things seem to change physically, making my perfect action no longer fit. I think it must be dimensional shift or something. Good thing I have the tin foil hat with the propeller on top or I'd get confused a lot. Sigh. Being perfect is such a burden.
