Wink: Most of my guns are heavy med. or big bores,I shoot cast in these guns to be able to shoot more at a lower cost. The Lyman cast book likes to use small amounts of fast powders ,I never found that to work for me the accuraty does not seem to be there. The med. speed powders work better for me if the speeds are kept to say 1400 to 1600 ft/sec powders like 4198/5744/4895 will do. I get good acc. and a mild recoil,If driven faster leading starts at maybe 1800 and up,acc is also lost. With a good lube,Hard bullets, slow powders and some times fillers speeds over 2000 are possible. In this catagory a very good hunting combo is a paper patch pure lead bullet at high speed. It seems that the slower powders get the bullets of at a slower start and thereby reducing the leading a lot. At the +/- 1600 range you point of impact will be very diff.than the sight setting for your full house jacketed loads. Here you can record your scope setting and re zero for the cast or if you like me have Q R mounts on your guns remove the scope and use the opensights. It is great fun to go to the range set up some steel plates and fire a 100 or so out of our big bore. These loads will ofcourse not have the same practice value because of the lesser recoil. The high speed loads will do better in this department, however here the powder cost will play role. At 100 gr per round you will get 70 cart. out of one lbs of powder. However if practice for a hunt is the goal than this would be the way to go,you may even be able to regulate your loads to your scope setting. So Wink there you have it,take your pick and go for it,if it was not for cast bullets more than half of my guns would be sitting in the gunsafe a lot more than the do now. Regards Martin | ||
