Does anyone have any specific experience with Hitech's lot # LT-C12910 of WC820? Or, lot# LC-HP1228-03 of WC846? Cartridges of interest are .30 carb, .41 mag and .44 mag using WC820 and .223 condom loads for the WC846. Thanks, BD

BD, I don't have any experience with those
particular lot numbers.

But speaking in general, I use middle loads from a load book
using H110 for the WC820 and AA2230 for the WC846. The milsurps
are slower than the commercial powders. So, finding a mid-range
load of the commercial powders and using that as a starting point to
go up from, seems to work pretty well.

I don't think you can always count on milsurps being slow compared to their commercial counterparts. As I said over in Reloading, my batch of WC820's comparable to AA#9 rather than H110 or 296. 22 grains of it under a 240 gr. lead bullet in .44 Mag is a hot load, about 1575 FPS from my 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk. When I got it the dealer said to use H110 or 296 loading data. Winchester said to use 25 grains of 296 with that bullet and not to reduce the load. If I'd followed that recommendation I believe I'd've been shooting considerably hotter than I'd like.

if you want an semi educated guess based on accuracy and velocities and looks wc820 h108 and aa9 are all the same powder. My guess is that aa and hodgdon bought a bunch of the surplus powder and bottled it.

I have used a lot of WC820. I chronograph same loads with H110 or W296 for each new batch. The last batch matched current lots of W296 exactly. This stuff works great in .357, .41 and .44 mag. Also works great in the.32-20 in a strong gun.

CGB,
Good info. Has this been your experience with different lots of WC820 or just this latest batch? Can you share the lot number and/or supplier?

im on my 5th keg of it now and all of it was faster burning then 110 I get real sticky extraction in all my guns trying to use 110 data. The new powder burns about like aa9 and the pull down is about like 2400

This discussion is not real useful without specific lot numbers.
The thing about surplus powder is the variation in buring rate between lots. Maybe we could gather some general impressions on specific lots and post it to a table on cast pics by lot#. This would be useful to someone buying a new, (to them), lot. Particularly in the case of unusually fast or slow lots. BD

I will have to look at lot number on my last jug. It is a couple of years old now. I wonder if the lot no. on the jug is the actual manufacturers lot no. or just the sellers no.?
