Hi All, I have some HS-6 and was wondering if I could load it using .44 Mag. Data from Hodgdon's or is this one of those powders that will be unsafe with less in that big case? Don't see too much going on with this powder in cast bullets. It's about the same as Win 540 I think. Saw 13.5 gr. with 265 gr. bullets & was going to load some Lyman 245 gr. which I've had great luck with with Blue Dot in that gun. Also have some little 200 gr. Lee & 214 gr. Lee Plain Base that work good in that gun with lighter charges of Blue Dot. So...not to confuse the issue. Was looking for some loads with the HS-6 if anyone knows of any. Got some time since recovering from back surgery is what I'm doing now. Thanks in Advance, Newtire

Newtire...It's a tad fast for the 444 I expect. Of course, you can shoot almost any powder in any case and it will go bang and the bullet will exit but not one I'd choose for the 444. I use a lot of it in the 25-20 and 38 Special though./beagle

Newtire: you ask: I have some HS-6 and was wondering if I could load it using .44 Mag. Data from Hodgdon's or is this one of those powders that will be unsafe with less in that big case? F: Don't bother with such fast powder in the 444. Get yourself some SR4759, IMR4198, 5744 and shoot the rifle and carry on. In my 444 I use 19 grains SR4759 inder the 475 grain bullet for long range shooting. No others need apply.. Good morning, Forrest

Thanks guys, I know it will go bang but was just concerned about there being a bad reaction like with some of the ball powders like H-110 that they warn about. Have shot some .440 & .451 round balls sized down to .431 in a "Beagalized" Lee sizer smeared up with liquid Alox and 10 gr. Unique. Sounds like a big air-rifle and the ball exits every time (even with 8 gr. Unique) so thought I'd give this stuff a try. Otherwise, I'll have to burn it up in some Hi-Vel shotgun loads which my shoulder don't like! Just in it for fun. Newtire

Newtire, HS6 would be marginal at best. It's a ball powder, don't forget! In your straight walled case, 444, it would work better than OK if you applid a filler leaving no air space, like using your shotgun plastic filler. ... felix

Felix: There you are! I've been looking all over the web for you, and amazingly enough here you come along on this site. In my 44/63 Ballard- AKA 444 Marlin - I have been ver successful shooting the above mentioned load of SR4759 and heavy bullet. Left unsaid was the fact that I also use a 16 twist barrel, necessary for any real shooting. Also, the use of T/P filler and inverted gas checks for consistent burn of powder and sealing of pressure. Currently under experimentation is AA2200 in nearly full power loads. So far I've found velocities too high, recoil too heavy and Standard deviations too large for "match" shooting, but I have 8 pounds of the stuff to experiment with. Good evening, Forrest

Forrest, I've seen your posts here, but not too often since Aladin took off. That was some time ago, for sure. I think Newtire is interested in popcorn loads more than anything else, so a cheap per load pistol speed should suffice. These ball powders, unless in the 231 speed arena, are suspect at best for unpacked loads. T/P won't provide that. You might try some plastic filler with your 2200 for a softer load too. ... felix

Felix: Fe: I've seen your posts here, but not too often since Aladin took off. That was some time ago, for sure.. Fo: Yes, I miss Aladin. I don't come on all that often these days, but I watch most of the time, writting usually when the 44 or long range shooting is mentioned. Fe: You might try some plastic filler with your 2200 for a softer load too. Fo; Well, the current load with AA2200 is 27 grains 2200, 15 grains Hominy Grits and the 480 grain GC Mos mullet. Somehow this combination has eliminated the high/low split of velocity and recoil is quite tollerable. I have no idea where a fellow might get any plastic filler. Good evening, Forrest

Yes, Forrest, it is hard to beat grits from a straight walled case. That's what I use with light loads in the pistol cases. I take care and make sure they are bone dry before loading, and never compress. ... felix
