I need to buy (horrors)some of this low melting stuff to really see what I am dealing with in some of my Millsurp rifles. Since I have a melting pot already, is this an alloy I can brew up myself? Are the component metals easy to find? Thanks in advance, (I think Martha would make her own don't you?) Maybe this would be a "Good Thing" JB.

I think it is and would be so much easier for you to simply get on the phone to Brownell's and order a half pound of it.

You can sign me off as a "Former employee of Cerro Metal Products"

I agree with Hobie. The seperate components would be fairly cheap in truck loads, but very expensive in small lots. Some metals to make a low melting alloy can be detremental to your health, besides the problems in EPA shipping. Just buy the low melting stuff already made up. ... felix

JB: You can also get a similar - but not identical - alloy from GAR at a bit better price and it includes the "dam" material to close off extractor slots, etc. Try garreloading@aol.com; they don't have a website. BUT DO NOT use your regular melting pot or ladle, and DO NOT EVER put the chamber cast stuff in any or your moulds! Some of the components will "poison" your casting alloys, even in trace amounts. You can bend one of Catpetman's "bait cans" (tuna cans) into a nice litle combo melting pot with a pouring spout. Pre-warm the barrel/chamber before running the cast. If you goof up, warming to 200F or so will let you pour the bad cast out and try again. floodgate

JB. I live about 80 Mi. from a lead foundry where they alloy this & anything to do with lead. When I went there & spoke to them about it, the cheapskate in me was showing more than a bit as usual. The stuff is expensive in small lots, but I bought 25 lbs. & saved a whole lot of money. (VBG) I'm trying to recoup my money, which is what I had in mind when I bought it, (just haven't gotten around to it just yet). What could be a fly in the ointment is that I live in Canada. I don't know if customs would present a problem or not. I owe the posters on this board more than I will ever be able to repay. I would love to send you or anyone else some, if possible. The cost would be $10.oo Can. or about $7.50U.S. for an approx. 14oz. ingot. plus shipping. This would give me a few dollars to pay for gas. As an experiment with customs I would be willing to ship the first one at my own risk. If you're interested , let me know. Ron.D

If you are going to get one of the low melting alloys to cast a chamber, I would offer two suggestions from experience-
1) Get an alloy that will melt low enugh to melt at hot water temp. or a hair dryer release.
2) get the cooling curve of the alloy(which will be significant!) over time, for when you will take your initial and further measurements. Without this, all your measurements will be off. - Lew

JB, & Ed. I'll get to the post office as soon as it opens & find out the shipping cost. This stuff will easily cast into a flat shape for shipping in on of those (anything you can get into them ) envelopes. I'll also check into the correct exchange rate.
Lew, this alloy is refered to as 158-190, the same alloy as Cerro-safe. Ron.D

OK. guys I've got some cast into flat sheets & been to the post office. The total cost is $10.50 U.S. funds or $14.50 Canadian funds. You must specify on the cheque. You don't need to send anything till you receive the packages. Emails on their way.

RonD, Looks like you are on you way to putting a dent in that 25lb chunk of alloy. I did the same thing with Kapok some time back. I bought a small bale of the stuff for my cast loads and I have been selling off bags of it on ebay. It has funded a few pounds of powder and paid for itself as it will pay for your alloy. Once you get the postage you could do the same, If you have never done ebay I would discuss it with you off line. A side story about shipping and ebay. A guy was selling lineotype bars on ebay some time back and shipping them for dirt cheap using the USPS cardboard envelope. They charge a flat fee for anyting you can stuff into it. He reinforced the cardboard envelope by completely wraping it in clear strong packing tape and was shipping like 20lb?? for $4.??. drop me a line when you get the postage. JB
