My friend wanted to sight in his .50 BMG at long range so I grabbed my BFR .45-70 with the cast bullets from my home made mold and went over. We set up targets for him and got the settings. We have a half size steel buffalo at 510 yds. I decided to see if I could hit it with my revolver. I am sighted for 75 yds for deer and didn't want to change it so I started by aiming at a ridge line above the buf. I have the Bushnell red dot sight on it. First shots were just under the target. I aimed a little higher and put two just over that hit a large rock behind the buf. These impacts [Big Grin] [Big Grin] were only 3" apart. My next shot hit the buf just below center so we quit because it was getting dark. All shots were directly in a vertical line with the center of the target. I just had trouble with the proper elevation because I had no aiming point. I estimate the holdover at roughly 24 feet. The bullet impact on the rocks was tremendous creating a huge plume of dust. I am extremely happy with this bullet and the accuracy is really great. I would really like to see what it can do with something to aim at. It's tough to aim at brush and sky. Any ideas on getting a target 24' above my buf? Yeah, I know, I'm crazy but darn it's fun.

I dont think you are crazy it sounds like something I would do.

A few recommendations on how to set up your target

Possibility one: If you have a tall enough backstop you could screw 3 to 4 sheets of 4' x 8' x 1/2" plywood together to make a target tall enough to shoot at. Just put a series of bulls-eye about 2ft apart and you can start having fun.

Possibility two: is get a mill-dot scope the dots will help with hold over elevation.

When I am sighting my rifle and want to check bullet drop at different ranges say 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards, 400 yards, I use 1 sheet of 1/2" plywood put a 1.5" florescent orange dot about 1.5 feet from the top, back up and keep shooting at the same dot. Tape measure the distance from the bulls-eye, and write it down on a card and keep it with me for future reference. BTW I am using an 8 to 32 power Bushnell Scope on a 22-250 or 7mm Mag. Good shooting [Cool]

If you get some times when the wind calms down, put up a balloon on a string.

Notrichochet, thought about the balloon idea but we never have real calm days. Then I figured out that if I fill the balloon with lead it would not blow around. [Roll Eyes]

If it blows real steadily, how about a kite?

I thought this was going to be a post about hunting down here in East Texas, an mosquitos! I can't wait for a frost!
If this is a place you go to reg'lar like, you could sink a piece of 1 1/2" to 2" pipe, almost flush, in the ground about 2ft. Then make up a jointed piece of 1 1/4 or 1 1/2" PVC pipe in about 4-6ft joints to put together, an slip it into the ground pipe each time you go. Paint 4" to 6" black bands every 4" to 6" (i.e., equal B&W STRIPES?), like a range pole. It should be 2-3ft BESIDE your target, so you can use the horizontal crosswire on the bands, and the vertical on the target. That way, you won't likely hit the pipe. I got to shoot at a range one time with a setup like this... It worked pretty well! This was a permanent set up, and they had used drill stem, and it was 30ft tall! They had 12" to 2' gongs out of 5/8" or 3/4" plate out to 1000 yds. We had a ball! Wish something like that were around here.........Bug.

I was at the cowboy shoot the other day. After it was over a guy brought out his 45-70 single shot and tried shooting the buffalo, ours is around 300yds. I had a bunch of 45colts leftover, so I sat down with my 4 5/8" BlackHawk in the Elmer Keith position. Once I got the elevation down, I put more on the target than he did.

Lar45, I once put 12 shots out of 12 through a 5 gal. bucket at 400 yds with my Super Redhawk .44. I cheated though, I had a scope on it and adjusted it to hit. [Big Grin]

Reminds me of the time we were at a public range and this fella unloaded a pile of guns from his car. He asked if he could put up a target. Well, he walked out about 30 foot or so and stuck a stick in the ground with a huge paper target on it. I watched him put one or two holes in it with a couple of cylinders full. I asked if I could try his Blackhawk. I clicked a bunch on the sight, grabbed some of my loads, got in a Creedmore position and proceeded to bounce a gallon milk jug all over the 200 yd. berm. Ever see HUGE GIANT EYEBALLS? I don't think he knew the thing would shoot past 30 feet. Darn, that was fun! [Razz] [Razz]

Hey guys, I just spent two days making an LBT type boolit mold for the .44. It came out a little heavy at 330 grs. but it is .430 and is only .0005" out of round. I have to tap the gas checks on by rapping them on the bench so I will try to anneal some. I will let you know how they shoot soon.

I shot the .44 boolits I made today (just six) and even though I forgot my glasses and see 3 fuzzy dots in the red dot sight, I had all six shots [Big Grin] [Big Grin] in just over an inch at 50 yds. I am happy.
