I've seen mention of these single shot 357 mags being re-chambered to 357 max. Just curios what folks results have been with this combo. I know how suprisingly powerful a 10" 357 max contender is, and figure an extra 8-10" of barrel should be good for another 200-300 fps. I'm mainly interested in 200 gr cast @ ~2000 fps.

I can't recomend it, but I was pushing the 200 gr to just over 1900 fps, from the 10" barrel. You can't squeze enough 1680 in the case to hurt it with the 200's, but H-110 acts kinda funny when pushed that high. I'd imagine with the longer barrel, 1680 and RL-7 would start to do their thing. I even read a Paco article about using the big honking 358009 in the max rifle, and getting velocities in the 1700 fps range.

Paul, I have had great difficulty getting good accuracy beyond 1400 fps with cast bullets in any of my Handi's, I have four of them. The 45-70. 44 Mag, and 357 Max, (a 357 Mag. rechamber) all appear to have Marlins infamous mirco groove rifling, the 44 has 12 lands and grooves of about .002-.003" deep, the 357 has eight of about he same depth, so most of my cast stuff I am shooting at 900-1250 fps. However, with jacketed bullets, the Max is an altogether different story. I am pushing Hornady XTP 180's to 2060 fps (average) using 26 grains of 1680. Using 200 grain bullets I have not been able to get past 1850 fps, even using very heavy charges of Rx7 or 1680. Trust me, I tried. I shot a spike this year with the XTP load at 25 yards, and the bullet performance was phenonemal. I do not know of a .35 200 grain bullet that is comparable to the XTP. The Maximum is like the 44 Mag, it performs all out of proportion to it's case size.
I've been shooting an older rechambered H&R with conventional rifling and was getting 1960 fps with WW 680 and the Lyman 358315 weighing 212 grains with my alloy. Accuracy was running 1.25" or so at 50 yards. I don't have ready access to a 100 yard range.
I have a keg of WC 680 and will check how close that runs to what I am used to.
BigBoreFan just rechambered an NEF and a Rossi at the same time. It will be interesting to see how those two compare.
