I am thinking about taking a deer or two this year, any of you mosin guys know a good grain for my M44 for deer ?..I'm using a 155 grain Lee right now, I been wanting to go larger anyway, but now I need a good deer bullet up to say 200 yards, preferably a "Lee" mold around 314 diameter.

Bulletman,
I don't have any Lee 30 cal moulds suitable for a .311 or larger bore. I do like the 311291HP and 31141HP if you can get ones that drop .312-.314 bullets by Beagling them. I also like the 316475 and bump a flat nose on it. I tend to use loads intended for 30.06. I start low and work my way up. Orygun

BM, you're too late to the party. xp100r (Wally) designed just what you need, and we had a special order of 25 molds through Midway about a year ago.

Most of the molds went to folks who wanted them for their .303 Enfields. If you can't scrounge one from those who bought them, maybe you can drum up enough interest to make another order of 25 either through Midsouth or directly to Lee Precision. If all else fails, there are a lot of nice things being said about Mountain Molds.

One of the 303 moulds is what you are looking for. Saeco makes a nice 180 bullet that will cast out at 314-15 on the body and 302 on the nose. Many of the older Lyman moulds throw large bullets. i have one 311291 that throws a bullet with a full .317 on the body.

You might want to check with Buckshot, as I believe he has played with these quite a bit. he appears to have made the Cast Boolit room his home. I think he likes the chronological better than this forum. Gotta say, I believe I do to.

I just called "Lee" they are going to call me back after they hunt around to see if they have a 314 mold, They did say they will custom run what ever I want, so you all be thinking about adding "314" to your collection, what ever weight we want and design, I would think maybe a design that would work for hunting and target. But hey I dont know much..LOL And it will be 25 orders to waive the 100 dollar setup fee.If this dont work out, I will just go get a Lyman..I just love the price of anything "Lee". So far all my Lee stuff works great.
The single mold will be 18.00
Double is 25.00

Maybe you you ask some board members to "donate" samples of cast bullets with associated mold info. , test them in your rifle and then decide. Of course, if you are like the rest of us, their will be atleast six new molds you will need. wrg-inc

the best thing is to drop some money on a 314299 and be done with it. Size it accordingly for your rifle's throat.

Load this bullet over 40 grains IMR 7828.

When you get serious about shooting a Mosin, trade that 44 carbine off and buy a Finnish model 39.

Yep, I think yur right, gonna just get the lyman stuff and that will be that..wondering though, my setup is a lee 308 with the 311 expander. Do I need to get another expander ? or will a 314 as cast fit in the case ? my bore is 314.I slugged from the muzzle , it was tight going in, then at the breech it got real tight again and measured 314.
YUR crazy !!!!!!.You never get rid of mosins, you just get more !!!!LOL

Bulletman,

you got one thing right, I am CRAZY. HAR! I have 5 Mosins, two 39's, a Finn model 91, and two of the 44 carbines. i had a model 28 Finn but sold it to a man crazier than me for lots of his money.

I am bad to buy things in quantity....2 garands...now what fool needs 2 Garands? me obviously. I think I have 5 Marlin 30-30's, two Marlin 35's, two Winchester model 95's, 2 Browning Citori's, 3 or 4 SKS's, 2 Browning Hi-Powers, 2 Swede Mausers and most of them draw dust and cobwebs....reckon a spider needs a place to live though!

I suggest you buy a Lee .314 sizer kit and get yourself a Lyman .30 'M' die for belling the necks before seating your cast bullet. get the 'short' M die..it works for all 30's.
