Howdy the fire - just thought I'd give a range report on my shootin today. I just got a USFA SAA in 45 colt with 4-3/4 barrel. Also recently got a LBT .45 caliber 250 grain WFN mold. What can I say - I just married them to fellers up and with a little red dot in the middle and outcome success. I've been using a 250 grain ENFP from a Magma mold cast with an alloy to give 18 bhn. Success was real good and could easily shoot 10 rounds into 1.5" at 25 yards out of my Colt with a charge of 5.6 grains of red dot. Thought I would try it with my new USFA. Shore enough shoots real good but it does lead some in my Colt. Since I just got a batch of the LBT's Sized and Lubed with Felix Lube from his big batch. Thought it was time to give them a try. I adjusted the dies accordignly. Figured I'd start with the same powder charge since the LBT seats about 1/8" shallower in the casing than the Magma rnfp and go from there. Loaded 10 rounds of three different powder charges from 5.6 to 6 grains. The first rounds out of the gun were 5.6 grains shooting from a rested position in the cold and windy conditions here near Chicago on monday. I'll be damned if they didn;t appear to make one nice little group at 20 yards. Wasnt real positive because I was shooting at painted steel targets that were shot up some. Oops back up some - I have already shot probably 150 rounds through the gun with the magma mold bullets before I tried the LBT bullets so the gun was dirty. The heavier charges of REd Dot appeared to shoot just about as well but I wasnt sure if the gun was throwing some flyers - I did not get the perfect little group it appeared to have gotten with 5.6. Hell I might have been excited and forget to concentrate on trigger pull and grip opening the groups up. After shooting these LBT bullets I checked the barrel and cylinder. No leading - none just some powder build up. I says to myself - Self - if these shoot as good as you think they do you got yerself a winner here with the first test rounds out of the gun. I'll be damned. I had already shot up probably 150 rounds of the magma bullets before but never looked for leading so I thought I would test and see if I could shoot it out. Tuesday I went to the range with about 70 rounds of the magma bullets and shot them up just about as fast as I could load'em and shoot'em. The dangblasted gun just likes ta shoot. I was puttin rounds right in there at 50 yards out in the field. If there was a cat out there it would have been in serious trouble but I was getting some flyers - could have been me as I was shootin offhand but them bullets was just goin where I wanted'em too. And I did lead the gun up perdy good down by the throat. Got to shoot them LBT bullets today. Got me some spray paint and painted the targets fresh and commenced ta shootin. The first two groups out of the gun were nice and small - probably about 1.5" at 20 yards. I figured I wasnt mistaken on my observation the previous time. Well the next groups were even tighter - I even got one group that looked like I was drilling a hole at 20 yards. I loaded another cylinder full and drew down on a little spot on the target - did I mention the gun shoots to point of aim. Well, it surely does and after today I can say with utmost certainty it shoots EXACTLY to point of aim. I put the next round less than half an inch from that little mark on the targets. The two groups I drew down on the bolt used ta hang the targets - its a 3/8 carriage head bolt - yep just pounded them poor little bolts. All in all I shot 6 groups three of which looked like one big bullet mark and the first two had two flyers less than an inch out from the rest. Yep fellers if'n it werent fer you all and this here confuser and these bulletin boards I might still be shootin commercial reloads, smilin whilst I was cleanin the lead outta my guns fer an hour or two after tryin ta hit a beer can at 25 yards. Oh yea - them LBT bullets cast of wheel weights cleaned the lead right outta the gun. Only shot up 45 rounds but I'd say 90% of the lead that was there is gone. Only a trace left and I'll bet a few more rounds through a cold barrel will take care of that. Sorry to be so long winded but I'm so dangblasted tickled I caint see straight no more - dont know what I'm gonna do with the 700 magma bullets I got loaded up. Kinda dont have a desire ta shoot them any more - gonna haft to though on count I need the casing to load them otherns up in. | ||
