Someone suggested posting information about BD's bullet design for the 45acp, to generate more interest (and orders) so Lee will produce the mold. Here is a pic of my version -- I should qualify it by saying that BD's original version has a slightly deeper grease groove. With a metplat of about 0.325", BD's design offers plenty of "slap" yet will still feed reliably in most 45s.

This is the web site to see the bullets on special order, where we need 25 orders to get the mold made. - Lew <<http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/so_mould.asp>> Special Order Molds

Thanks mountaingun. I 'd like to point out that this design is also available from Mountain Molds. I have one each of the 200 and 230 grain molds and they are excellent two cavity molds. If the Lee deal doesn't happen we'll have to start pestering mountaingun to turn out some four cavity molds, or maybe some in Magna blocks? BD

Getting the initial 25 orders in for a Midsouth LEE deal generally involves talking your design up a bit on some other lists as well. You have to post the web address to the design off the Midsouth pages and answer questions on those other lists for a bit concerning why your bullet does what it does better than what is out there now. Since this is for a .45 ACP, you should hit some of those Colt lists as well. This is how you can best expedite getting your design cut. Oldfeller

BD's boolit shoots exceedingly well with a 26 twist winchester lever gun in 45 colt using 18 grains WC820. A winner design, but Dan, you should increase the lube depth back up to insure a good lube function out of a 24 inch barrel. ... felix

Felix, I am interested in understanding the optimum grease groove depth and that is why I have started playing with hi velocity '06 loads, figuring they will be a true test of bullet lubrication. If I can find a consistently performing load to use as a control I will then proceed to test otherwise identical bullets that have different groove diameters, different groove lengths, and lotsa little grooves vs. one or two big grooves. Personally, I am very skeptical of the need for deep grooves, but we shall see what the data says -- if I can ever find time to go shooting. The original molds that I made for BD did have his deep groove, if I remember correctly.

Dan, deep grooves require softer lube as you know. Most 45 boolits should be using soft lube anyway, acp or lc, especially for BP. Shallow grooves are fine for the extra slick hard stuff. Besides that, most cowboy guns have sloppy chambers, big forcing cones, etc., and that means more lube to help act as a gas seal. Not everyone is going to make a boolit fit the gun, and it is almost impossible to do this in the lever guns. The big ass boolits won't let the round chamber when coming from the tube. The angle is such that a big boolit produces too fat of a case at the wrong place. ... felix
