What is a good source of Gas Checks?

How about homemade, what is the metal that they are made of? Mabey a sheet of tin with a heavy duty hole punch?

Thanks

Checks have been made of every thing from milk cartons to styrofoam to beer cans. I think Stillwell makes a punch and die set to cut checks from beer cans. I used to cut them out of pop cans with tin snips and then swage them on a plain-base bullet in the lubri-sizer, but only as an experiment (it worked, too).

Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, there's a lot to be said for just buying checks from Hornady.

The Hanned Line makes a punch/swage assembly to make really good gas checks of the Lyman slip on design, made from Al. beer cans.

The only home made ones I ever saw was a kit made by Herters many years ago. A friend of mine had one and we made a lot of .30 Cal. and .270 Cal. that worked pretty well. I imagine that these new ones are the same principle, cut out the circles with a hammer on a piece of lead backing then put the little circles into a die and put the punch on top and hit it with a hammer.

Thanks

mountaingun, lewisgoldstein, Ed Barrett.

I looked up the web page and it seems a little spendy for my taste (cheapskate) and I think I will work on trying to comeup with a homemade version. Will try some different sizes.

Thanks for the help

Azcoyhunter,
Yes,it does seem illogical to buy a tool, the price of 10,000 gas checks.
Where this tool really comes in handy is if you have some PB molds you really like, $50-100 ea., or are discontinued, and you would like to start driving them with a GC, then this tool is worthwhile. - Lew

I am wondering what the diameter of a 7mm .30, Gas Checks are before it is "cupped".

That way I could just cut some metal and crimp it on,I think it will be hard to make sure it goes on square and stays on. Crimp I guess.

Anyway, thanks for the help.
