Cast in a Number 1 458 Win Mag

I been fighting the "freeway on ramp" throat in the Number 1 Ruger 458 Win Mag for years with cast. I love that heavy barrel but have only gotten it to shoot with the 45-500-FN RCBS and the 462560 Lyman and they were seated way out to touch the lands. Now, this is not a good situation due to all the exposed lube in the lube grooves in a field situation.

I got to thinking and chose a 457122 mould that drops them pretty big. I've made a plug for this mould and it makes a solid that weighs right at 350 grains instead of a hollow point. I "beagled" the mould and ended up with a .461+ bullet.

Now, lubing that big monster proved a problem so I got a .462" sizer made.

Okay, I have a big bullet. Next, problem...a RCBS seater is made for jacketed .458" diameter bullets or at least mine was. I ended up with the crimping shoulder seating my bullets. I had my friend ream that boy out on a Sunnen grinder to take .462s freely and still leave some shoulder for crimping.

I loaded 24 this week and all of the modified stuff worked perfectly during loading and chambered freely. Load was 22.0 grains of Unique for a lack of a better load and no filler. Seating depth was to the top of the first band with a light crimp. Velocity was in the 1400s as I haven't crunched the average velocity and SD yet. After firing several groups to get my shoulder and flinch in condition, I managed several groups in the 2" range at 100 yards.

This is the best this rifle has done with a deep seated bullet and I think i'm on to something. More tests and other powders will follow.

Figured I'd throw this out for you guys that are struggling with a long throated Number 1 458 Win Mag like I am./beagle

I shoot the same bullet in my #1 what i do is just leave the lube out of the first two lube groves and crimp on the second one. I have been sizing to .460 and using heavy loads of 3031 with a cci mag primer. It will shoot into 2 inches at 100 yards. Not match accuracy but good enough for anything that that gun will be used for. I havent had any leading problems lubing only half the bullet.

buckshot....been considering that. Probably be about like a 45/90.

This is the first time it has shown any accuracy with deep seated stuff.

Now, I'll move up some in bullet weight and a different powder. Looking for good accuracy at about 1800 FPS with a 300/350 grain bullet but I'll try them all sooner or later. Have everything Lyman and RCBS and Saeco has made in modern times so it will be along term experiment./beagle
