Anyone have any experience with casting bullets for this round? It is a true .300, not a .308 (as verified by chamber and barrel casting). Factory loadings were usually 90 grains round nose, but some were also 80 gr round nose. With lead and the very shallow rifling typically found in these rifles, all the research I have found recommends .301 diameter bullets.

Could also use source recommendations for mold maker or someone who may be selling such a cast bullet.

Thanks for any help out there. My rifle is just waiting to be shot as soon as a source for the bullets or molds are found.

Mike

Lyman made a 299153 and a 299155 mould that were 90 and 80 gr respectively. They are no longer in production and good luck finding one. There are several custom mould makers you might contact like Veral@ LBT or Mountain Moulds.

Thanks for the Lyman numbers, they are a start.

Some of the guys on Cast Boollits have reported good results with extreme size downs. They lube at the original size to support the bands. Lee will make custom sizers for $25. Starting from bullets sized and lubed to .308, you would only need a .304 and a .301 and you would probably want the .301 anyway.

Check in with the folks on the Bullet Making Board and on the swaging board at Graybeard's. It's just possible that one of them can help you.

You should be able to take one of the light .30 moulds such as the 308244 for the .30 Luger or the 311252 and downsize to .300". I've had very good luck downsizing. Just made some .333" bullets for a Portagee Mauser from .338 bullets.

The trick will be to find a .300 sizer as they're few and afr between. Stillwell will make you one but they're pricey.

I'd look at CBE in Australia as they make all kinds of strange moulds and there are several places over in the UK that advertise rook moulds.

I beleive if it were me, I'd try the do it yourself route first.

If you don't find a solution, contact me and I'll attempt downsizing some of the 308244s. They weigh about 94 grains and should do well in a rook rifle./beagle
