I bought a 400 gr. Lee 480 Ruger mold a year ago. I was disappointed with the quaility of bullets it makes. I am looking at upgrading and am wondering who else makes a .475 caliber mold? Any opinions?

Thanks,

ddj

I didn't see a lyman mold in my catalog. I have always had good luck with their molds. Can someone give me a part number for their favorite 480 Ruger mold.

I have the Lee mold for my .475 BFR and it makes a great boolit, almost as accurate as my home made molds. An inch at 50 yd's is easy with it. My own boolits go down to 5/8" and have done 7/8" at 100. The Lee is close.
Please explain what the problem is with your mold. You might need to send it back, my first was under size. They sent me a new one that is perfect. I size .476".
Yeah the molds are cheap and Lee wastes a lot of money replacing and fixing stuff but once you get a mold that is right, it sure works.

My molds don't line up perfect. There is always a significant ridge when cast. I have tried everything I can think of. I think I would like to try a different mold company. Any suggestions would be appreciated,

I've also found that the lee mold casts a good acccurate bullet. From your description I'll guess you have a bit of lead on the alignment pin or cavity that is preventing the mold from completely closing.

My other .475" molds were custom made by Mountain Molds, a 275 gr swc, my interpretation of the classic Keith design, and a 400 gr lfn with an extra long nose that provides more powder capacity in the case, though I keep my velocities to the 480 level. I've had both a 310 gr lfn and a 460 gr wfn made by ballisticast, they are hands down the best molds I've ever used.

L to R, 275 swc, 310 lfn, 400 lee, 400 lfn long, 460 wfn.

Mountain molds would be the way to go. You don't have to worry about under size boolits.
