In my M-71 .348, I have been pushing the 250 grain Barnes Original at 2300 fps. Now I have ordered some CB's at the same weight with gas checks. I slugged my barrel, and the professional bullet caster has this info. My questions are, should I expect to have to reduce this speed, and if so, how much would be recommended? The cast bullet chosen has a large dia. meplat, and it is my understanding that higher velocity is not a big factor in penetration with cast bullets, but what about the loss of shock factor and bullet expansion? I'm just a little confused on this, and don't wish to experiment on animals I respect too much.

Brushbuster....I'd reduce the velocity to about 1800-1900 FPS and then work up a cast load. After I had good cast loads at this velocity, I'd open the throttle a little at a time and develop a good hunting load. I envy your problem. I been looking for a nice shooter .348 for years and have the moulds, sizer, dies. Just sitting here leaning forward in the foxhole so to speak waiting for one to pop out of the woodwork./beagle
