Of the two rifles that I now have with 2 grooves, a P17 .30-06 Winchester and a 1941 No.1 Mark 4 SMLE (No.4 mark 1?) both have two very narrow grooves, lands taking up probably 80% of the area.

That's why I would think that the bullet shouldn't be too much bigger than the land diameter. But then I've not yet fired either.
