I am searching for older Lyman cast bullet molds made 50 + years ago or older. Need Lyman # 225415 flat nose and # 225438 Loverin round nose bullet both use gas checks. Will be loading for a Winchester pre 64 .22 Hornet rifle. Please PM me if you have them.
Thanks!

Both of those moulds are still available from Lyman. You should have no trouble at all obtaining either one, or both of them...

The newer Lyman molds have apparently been changed "improved" according to discussions on another forum. The change of the # 225415 has added a slighly longer length on the gas check section causing it to weigh about 4 g more than the original. In the 1 in 16 Hornet twist barrels the new improved bullet is not well stabilized. I checked with Lyman to see if they would make custom molds- they do not.
Thanks!

It would be fairly easy to have the newer molds milled to shorten the gas check shank.

Or the better option, have Mountain molds make you a custom mold of your design. http://www.mountainmolds.com/

The 225415 is typically looked at as being too heavy for the Hornet, so the extra five grains may be the kiss of death... I would think the 225438 is a good fit, as would be the 225107, assuming you can find one. That one has been out of production for quite a few years.

Best of luck to you... I have the 225415 mould and it shoots well in my NEF K-Hornet, but I suspect that barrel may have a faster twist than 1-16"... The most accurate load I ever shot out of it was a standard Winchester 55-grain soft point in front of 10 grains of AA2200 from Accurate Arms, touched off with a small pistol primer. One hole at 100, and the 225415 was not far behind...

I don't think Mountain Molds makes molds in that diameter.

I have a single cavity 225415 that I've had since the early '70s. When cast of WWs the bullets (fully dressed with GC and lube) weight 50 gr. I have shot these through numerous 16" twist hornets over the years and the story is always the same; excellent accuracy at 50 yards (sub 1") and very poor accuracy at 100 yards (2-3").

Conversly I have a newer 225438 (maybe 5 years old) that I shoot with very good success in numerous .22 Hornets (I have 4 myself). Cast of WWs + 2% tin the bullets weigh 46 gr fully dressed. In 16" twist barrels they give excellent accuracy to 150 yards.

I also have a 225107 mould and at 22 Magnum velocities of up to 2000 fps it is a real ass kicker on small ground squirels out of my 16" twist Ruger #3 Hornet.

This info is for information only as my moulds are not for sale. I've seen these moulds for sale on numerous sites so they can be had. Also new versions are available from several custom mould makers.

My advise is to go for the 225438 and look for a 225107.

Larry Gibson--You have bullet that is very accurate at 50 yards but not so at 100 yds. Easy fix. If used as hunting bullet get a rope that is 50 yards long and rope your deer before you shoot it.

That is one option, or he could take the rifle to a certain part of TN and it would shoot one hole groups out to a thousanbd yards. knifestarmental rotflmo

Jim, you might take a look here: http://www.brp.castpics.net/R1.html at the 226-47GC. It can be had in plain base also and is shooting some nice groups.
You need to lay off that stuff Scot. Another option is to learn how to make it shoot better. Starmetal did that.........others haven't. I still like Carpetmans option.
