I've long thought that the one bullet I lacked for my 480 Ruger was a Keith type SWC of 270 gr. I have a 310 gr LFN, 400 gr Lee, 400 gr LFN and 460 gr WFN that takes care of everything else, and I've tested 320, 335, 350, 390, and 435 gr molds of various styles as well before settling on the 4 above mentioned molds.

Well I finally got over the mountain molds website, http://www.mountainmolds.com/ and fiddled around with the bullet design software. I ended up selecting an original keith style with .090" bands, .35" nose length, 73% meplat, .476" dia from ww's and the OAL came to .655" That makes it just a touch shorter than a 250 gr 45 cal keith bullet, but otherwise a scaled up version of the classic sixgunning cast bullet.

While I really like the 310 gr LFN, it doesn't produce guilt edged accuracy at 700-800 fps, though run it over 9.7 gr Unique for 950 fps and it'll shoot as well as most rifles, and better than many. Trouble is, while milder than full house loads, it isn't truly mild. I can put the 400 gr bullets over 7 gr for 600 fps, but that goes through the ww's too fast. I figured driving a lighter bullet a bit slower would really make a pleasant practice load.

Time to make all those suppositions into reality. I might even get a chance to take some game with it this fall if things work out.

Just got back from vacation, and my wife picked up the mail that was being held at the post office. Low and behold in amongst the stack of bills and junk mail was a box from mountain molds. I'll start a new thread with some pics of the mold and bullets, but suffice to say I'm quite pleased with it and hope it shoots as good as it looks. After pre-heating the mold and casting it a few times to warm it up, I cast and dropped bullets just as nicely as could be. I cranked out 50 boolits in little time and would say it might be one of the best casting molds I have.

I ran them through the lube sizer this morning. I'm hoping to load some up and get to the range tommorrow. They measure .4765" in dia, and are .655" long. As cast from wheelweights should be right around 270-275 gr, exactly what I was after.
