I've done a search and not found that much here on this, though I've seen a fair bit in other places on the internet. I'll admit that I trust the AR regulars more than some guy I found on google. So, I've found a few different recipe's out there for DIY lube, and am wondering what ya'll experiences with them have been. I'm not too cheap to buy lube, barely Wink, but I sure do like the idea of a ten years supply for $20 and I can make it hot pink, the way I like. hilbily

One is Felix Lube
Felix Lube formula

2 Tablespoons mineral oil
1 Tablespoon castor oil
1 Tablespoon Ivory, or homemade soap (grated)
1 Tablespoon Lanolin
Beeswax - Piece approximately 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 1 "

Another is Barry Darr's
Barry Darr’s Lube
1 lb Paraffin
1 lb Vaseline
2 tablespoons (30 ml) STP Oil Treatment

And also Harlow's which is Darr's with 1 lb. of beesway added

I'm shooting a .41 mag, but want something that works well for .38 spl through 44 mag. Not loading for any rifles just yet, but may in the future. Just wondering what characteristics I should look for/expect. Thanks in advance.

PS. Assuming any of these are worth using, would you flux with this, or just use pure parafin? Thanks again.

PSS I think it's worth mentioning that I'm fine with moderation and am not trying to push the outer bounds of velocity or anything like that.

I've used Felix World Famous Lube and it works well. Barry Darr is a schuetzen shooter and many like his lube but I haven't tried it. Emmert's lube is often used for black powder and works well with smokeless: 5 parts Beeswax, 4 parts unsalted plain Crisco, and 1 part Canola oil. Many substitute anhydrous lanolin for the canola oil. There are also a boo-coodle of other blends out there as well as available for sale. Perhaps the easiest to use is good old Lee Liquid Lube. It works.

Can you tell me the properties of them?
for instance, I've heard that the beeswax makes the lube a bit softer, which I guess makes it more suited for pistols than a faster rifle charge? bewildered

How much truth is there to the lube effecting accuracy? Would it be good to make up several batches and try them all?

Hope that isn't too many questions.

start with the felix lube.
follow the directions, especially the stirring at smoking hot for the whole half hour part.
you can adjust the firmness with either a bit more of the ivory soap or more of the b-wax.
lube can affect your accuracy about as much as a primer tweak.
you can also modify your felix lube for a lube-sizer or pan lubing.

Thanks, that thread is where I found several of them. I just don't "know" any of those guys, and am not real high on the idea of trying a stranger's advice in my babies guns. I've spent about a year on AR and have read enough of the various posters to trust quite a few of them. Thanks for your replies. I was afraid that Felix would get the nod. Seems like a bit of a pain to make, and a fairly small batch. I'll triple it and hopefully won't have to worry about stirring for 30 minutes for another 10 years. thanks again guys

Daniel

There are ONLY two sites worth a darn and they are here and castboolits.
I am 44man over there. There are a bunch of great fellas there, join and enjoy both sites.
The only thing I see is that it is a little slower here without new posts that often. Maybe because hunting season is over and it is too cold to do anything else.
We are expecting from 20" to 36" of snow right now.

I made a large batch of felix lube and cooked it in a large coffee can( most coffee cans are plastic nowdays--but find a metal one). When done I just left it in the coffee can and daub it in my sizer/luber as needed and put the lid back on for storage.

I have been making my own lube for a while now and it is simple in the extreme and works even in my 2400fps+ rifle bullets. For most aplications I use 2/3 bees wax to 1/3 petrolium jelly and for the high velocity rounds I lower the petrolium jelly content to about 15%. I get no leading and it is easy to make into tubes for the lubrisizer or to use for dip lubing. I bought a 5 kg block of bees wax for $20 and it will do me for a lifetime. I used to throw in a coloured crayon for the effect but dont bother with that now.

bfrshooter there is another site I visit regularly and that is nitroexpress and go to each for differing content. There are others but these three are the best IMO.
2 ft of snow is a lot to look forward to. Here it is the middle of summer and we are having days in the 30c range We are very well placed here in this part of NZ and the world and dont get the extremes that so many of you get elsewhere from the 35 - 40 c heat in australia to the alsakan cold. Your snow in WV is also more than the little we get here.

Do you have to make allowances for the tempretures when selecting your lube as I make mine for the intended velocity and it works well all year.

No, I don't change the lube but I can not shoot groups as tight in the winter. Powder burn and even primers have too much affect anyway.
I don't shoot much after deer season anyway and all of my accuracy work is mainly for hunting.
Those that live where it is cold almost all year have a much tougher time of it.

daniel177---You asked about the properties of lube. Felix is a member here but does not post here much. Being a member his contact info is listed so I'll post his email address fmr72901@juno.com you can contact him and he can tell you what the various ingredients do and if you have a special need, what adjustments to make. He is very knowledgeable and accomodating.
Anyone interested in the history of felix lube, here it is: Back in 1998 at the old now defunct Shooters forum there were a very few people posting on the cast bullet section. I went there and there was a discussion of homemade lubes that caught my interest. Different ones posted their recipes and felix would respond. It was obvious to me that he knew his stuff. He had posted his recipe and soon we had people coming in to inquire about it to include folks from all over the world (Australia and Canada for a couple places). Felix was getting bombarded with questions. Someone made comment he was getting to be world famous. If you remember the old Herters Catalog, their products all had humpteen names. So as a takeoff to that I named his lube Felix World Famous Bullet Lube and it stuck. About this same time a group from the Calif/Nevada area had a shoot in Nv at Topaz Lake which has become an annual deal at Winnemucca NV. Felix had a then teen age son that was a computer whizz. He started a site www.castpics.net where the lube recipe and pictures could be posted. Made it easier to refer all the inquires for the recipe to that site. The site has been ran by a couple others but is still going.
