Place: Private farm near Unanue City,Utracan, La Pampa Province, Republica Argentina.
Specie: Sus Scrofa
Guns: BRNO/ CZ CAL. 30.06, Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 - R4 - Nosler Factory; Bullet; BTBT 180 grains
Glock 27 Cal. 40, Magtech 180 GRS JHP Guardian Gold Bullets
Winchester Shotgun Pump action 12 gauge Reloaded Buckshot shells
First hit: (30.06) at 40 meter hight on shoulder, Rest 6 meters.

The passed october full moon, My friend Marcelo Romano, a Gunshop owner from Buenos Aires, phoned me and invited me to be part of a wildboard hunt dancing. The place was a private farm, in the limits of the Argentinian Pampa, Unanue, near the Colorado River.
With a nice lake, plenty of waterbirds bringed us this macnificent view (see the pink flamingos, Doves, Ducks)
[IMG:left] [/IMG]

Because it´s a cow farm, and not intended (yet!!!) for hunting pourpouses, we had to sleep on sleeping bags in a small house (smelling our own farts!!! Eeker), make our blinds, make our food (we only eat "asado" holycow clap and red wine during the three hunting days !!! A really wild place, that I like it.
During the morning, we look for the boards tracks, and marked the places with a gps. Four hunters, in four diferents places, in a huge shocker 45000 acres farm.
I chose a water hole, with a death cow in putrefaction process, thinking that this will be a good bait for a huge wildboar. Two guys with portable chairs near the farm fence, and the last one, Marcelo, inside of a dry water tank on a top of a windmill Wink.
I waited from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, during 3 days and nothing thumbdown, only foxes and rabitts visited my place.
The first night, when Gustavo and Me arrived to the house, Luis and Marcelo were waiting us, to look for a wounded wildboard Confused ! ! !.
At 9:00 pm a nice male passed in front of Luis´s place and he shoot !!! , the hit was nearly perfect on the shoulder but a little high, so the heart remained intact, and the bullet only destroyed the shoulder bones, muscles and one lung. The boar runed a few meters and and stopped for a while, it made a lot of noise near the Luis´s place, but he didn´t want to go alone to look for it sofa.
Marcelo left his rifle and took a Winchester pump shotgun and a Maglite, I took a huge Cabelas portable spotlight and My undercover defence pistol a Glock 40 Model 27 (I have the 500 magnum ready to go, but I left it on the truck , because I don´t have a good holster for comfortable carry, it´s heavy ( 8 inchs barrel) and I think, that will be too much, to walk with both heavy tools in the brush ( I missed My new 5 inch PC .44 mag.) .
After a 1/2 hour looking for the board in the hit place, Marcelo found a small piece of grass with dry blood, but it still been warmy thumb, a few minutes later I heard a sound in front of me, about 10 meters and nobody was walking there, so I invited Marcelo and his nice shotgun to join Me in that direction.
Passed a few seconds, we smelt the pig scent shocker, so we knew that we were in the right direction, we passed a heavy brush track and we saw it near the cow fence, just at 6 meters from Me and 8 from Marcelo shocker. I took of my glock from a paddle holster, but surely thinking that Marcelo would finish him, WRONG!!! shocker, Marcelo Shotgun`s was jamed with a f......... reloaded shotsell, so I have no choice but starting to shoot 2020 with my tiny Glock. The animal didn´t charged us, only ran to my left side (maybe blinded by the spotlight) after the third shot, the board stopped the run and I put two more shots. In the meaning time, Marcelo reloaded the shotgun and shoot twice. The wild boar was not a huge monster, maybe 180 lbs, about 6 or 7 total inches tusk, but was a nice dangerous encounter, we have meat in our frezzers, we passed wonderful days between friends beer.
The next day , Macerlo took a Big female thumb, but none of us saw another wildboard in the remaining days thumbdown .
Luis and his trophy:

The "Matador":

The Band:

The tusk:
[IMG:left] [/IMG]
The recovered bullets, from left to right:
30-06 cal. 180 grains BTBT,one Magtech guardian gold that didint touch bones (only skin, fat and muscles) the Magtech that hit in the skull frontal bone (Expanded) and some of the buckshots that didint passed the ribs:
[IMG:left] [/IMG]
the buckshot hit:
[IMG:left] [/IMG]
the rifle hit (a lot meat damage!!!):
[IMG:left] [/IMG]
one of the glock hit:
[IMG:left] [/IMG]
I learnt some leasond:
-Never go to look for a wounded animal alone.
-In the night, the ilumination device must be in you shooting system.
-Every time carry a back-up gun
and never seat in the brush in the darkness (see the brush spine shockerthat I took of full deep from my ass moon! ! !)
the f.....spine!!!
[IMG:left] [/IMG]

Only two doubts remaining, are the buckshoot efective on heavy wildboards?
This question remember a Dr. Juan Pozzi commentary about the ineffective performance of the buckshot that he read in a Chuck Taylor article and a Santiago del Estero hunt experience; in that time a great friend and knifemaker Cristian Andreo shoot and hit two shotshells with buckshot, but the pig didn´t stopped, Juan killed it with his glock 40 with a neck hit saving Marcos Fischer s life!!!.
The buckshot in this two experiences stayed under the thick skin and didn´t pass the ribs or the torax. Maybe the are only effective in soft skin animals like leopard, puma, broked deer or pecari. I hope all of you enjoy my report, This is dedicated to our friend from Arizona Mr. Bill Berlat.Viejo Gringo: I hope you enjoy it Kind Regard Guillermo. ! ! !

Beautiful shotgun! I've always wanted a tactical/home defense shotgun. I think my .458 will have to do for now

Guillermo. A very interesting hunt report. And a great way you had to show the results of the different cartridges used. I am not a fan of buckshot for feral hogs. (not that I have ever used one for that) Not unless the distance is really up close and personal. The penetration is just not adequate.

As you point out so well, with soft skinned animals it is a different story.

What I appreciated in your report is your camping diet: "we only eat "asado" holycow clap thumb Wonderful.

Be well my friend and keep the hunting stories coming......we all have lot to learn from your experiences.

Has Juan Pozzi seen your Rem 870? He has a new Mossberg that would be well equipped if fitted out as yours is. On a night siumulated combat shoot it would be deadly.

"a little ventilated" Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin I liked that !!!

I am also a 375 H&H fan... in fact is my general purpose caliber - but my best hog caliber is the mighty 45/70, of course in a lever action rifle Cool

I would never trust buckshot on a boar. That light has short battery life though it's very bright [It will illuminate to 100 yards ! ]. Take the shotgun with a bandolier of slugs and another bandolier of batteries for the G2 !! Big Grin I've had a .40 for about 15 years .An excellent cartridge but not for boar.A 44 mag would be much better. I know nothing about Magtech but if it doesn't expand unless it hits bone it's not very good for most uses.....A great story !! clap

METE; I absolutly agree with you thumb, no more buckshot on wild board, next time I only will use slugs Wink.Regarding the 40 S&W Magtech, after this experience I changed it for federal Hidra-Shock just in case of a "two leg" pig encounter Wink, but for other side be aware of shooting with heavy full loads in the .44 Magnum at a none CNS hit, some times the bullets passed trought all the pig and didint stop neither shocker, I think that this happen to my friend Bill Berlat in a recent Hunt with his .475 S.A. and Garret or Buffalo bore bullets (I dont remember),besides this I much prefer a long blody wound chanel with a lot of holes, broken bones and organs than only one with superficial expansion wound. The xenon bulb are my favorite for tactical (as a blind tool) or nigth hunting to long distance in non moon nights, but as do you say the batteries are out in short time, for looking for wounded animals I used the cabelas Alaskan guide that have both features (three whites leds option or one 50 lumens xenon bulbs in the same flashlight!!! clap) and is more cheap than the similar surefire model Wink. Anytime Regards: Guillermo.[IMG:left] [/IMG]
