Six of us headed to a ranch near Freer, Texas for some javelina and hog hunting this weekend. We had to battle ice covered roads to get there Friday morning, but the weather got better by that afternoon.

We got five javelinas, 3 hogs, and called in a coyote and a bobcat.

As usual, we ate well and too much. Friday night was Axis venison chili and Saturday night was chicken and sausage gumbo!

Our gang.

The ranch.

Bennie and I shot these two at the same time on the count of "3" after stalking up to 100 yards from them. Both dropped in their tracks. Bennie was using his 6.5 Grendel and I had my .223. His ended up being a real moose! It weighed 58 pounds! That is a HUGE javelina. He is getting it mounted.

Bennie's 2nd javelina.

My 2nd javelina.

Brian wanted hog meat.

This is his first hog.

Here is Brian's 2nd hog. (That is Todd in the photo holding the hog for him.)

Bennie called in a nice female bobcat. Here is the bobcat with Brian's cottontail he shot for the pot.

I shot this eater size hog Friday just before sundown.

As always, GREAT photos and report, Bob! Looks like you guys -- despite dealing with rough weather -- had a terrific (not to mention productive!) hunt. tu2 tu2

PS-Do you know what bullet Bennie is shooting in his Grendel? Just curious as you know how I am about those 6.5s... Smiler

Outstanding, Bob. Great part of TX to hunt, too.

Bob

Thanks for the post. Was this a guided hunt or DIY hunt.

Thanks

It was semi-guided. The ranch manager did take half us to some blinds and do some corning of the roads. Half of us drove to blinds for a morning and late afternoon hunt. We spent a lot of time driving the ranch corning and hunting the roads. We did all of our own field dressing, skinning, and quartering of the game. We also cooked all of our own meals.
