Been waiting on Rattlesnaker to send me some pictures but they have not arrived yet so I will use the ones I have and add later. I left on 4-29-10 on my way to southern Ok to see if my south texas dogs could catch pigs in Ok. I met Rattlesnaker and a friend of his in Dallas and spent the night in Highland Park at Sam's house. We left Friday morning headed for the Ranch just North of Gene Autry. It was cool that afternoon so we took a tour of the ranch and then loaded dogs and started hunting. The guys at the ranch were certain that the hogs were bedded around the creeks and ponds. After looking around for awhile, I decided this was not the case but kept on trying anyway. When I am a guest I do what every one wants. After hunting till midnight we finally quit and went to bed. I was beginning to think that my dogs wasn't going to be able to find those Okie pigs. Next morning I told them that we needed to hunt the ridges and canyons because what we did yesterday didn't work. Everyone agreed and off we went. At the top of the ridge I walked some dogs across the canyon up the next ridge and down to the bottom. When I got to the bottom I was missing one dog. After awhile we heard him bayed about half way up the canyon so we went back up until we were even with him. Sotex and his bud's left out to go to him. When they were just about to the bottom a group of hogs crossed the road in front of us so I dumped the rest of the curs and as usual they hadn't seen them so they backtracked. They must have heard the other dog baying because they didn't come back. It wasn't long and we had two bays going on. I took the catch dogs and headed back down the hill to the second bay. When I got as close as I could I let the stags and mason out and headed to them. When I arrived they had this 200 lb boar caught in the creek. On the way down Rattlesnaker radioed me and said that they had shot the other hog and was headed our way. We took some pictures and went back to the ranger. After being successful hunting the ridges on one end of the ranch we headed to the other end wherewe had see some fresh sign earlier in the day. Walked all over that high country and never found any fresh sign or got a bark, so we headed to the north end of the ranch. I picked out a ridge and headed down.About 200 yards later I heard my young gyp whine in the dog box so I stopped and let the dogs out. wasn,t long and we had a bay down in the canyon. I sent the young guys down toward the bay and then released the catch dogs. Bam, caught sow. I drove the ranger down to the catch and they had her caught about 50 yds off a road.We started loading dogs and the young gyp would not load. She kept going out into the brush and coming back. Finally after about 10 minutes a bay. Didn't last long and she broke. I walked up in the direction I last heard her and she bayed again for about 5 barks and left again coming about 10 feet from me and headed toward the truck. I radioed Rattlesnaker and told him to let the other curs out . In a minute they bayed again and Rattlesnaker let the catch dogs out but she broke before they got there and the race was on going out of hearing. About a mile later we heard them fighting way on the other end of the ranch. When we finally got there they had her caught in a creek. The following video shows what was happening. After that long race everyone was tired and wet so we quit for the night and did some socializing. Next morning we started at daylight because Rattlesnaker had to get back to Dallas for a 2pm flight to NYC. We worked the ridge behind the ranch house and picked up a small boar. After that we loaded dogs and headed back to the house to depart. I enjoyed the hunt with new people, new country, renewing old friends. I still prefer S texas hunting because I don't have to go up and down! | ||
