Was driving down I-10 towards San Antonio couple of years back and saw a huge carcass off on the access road. Had to turn around and check it out. It was someone's show hog that had gotten out--beautiful one--though not a 500+ size. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool" | |||

Back in 1970 I was trucking across the rolling hills of So.Dak one late night when a huge white hog ran across the hwy in front of me about 50 feet in front of my truck. Looked all of 4 foot tall. No idea what it might of weighed. Sure was glad I didn't hit it. Big enough it would have derailed the single axle White tractor I was driving pulling a mostly empty 40' box trailer. Yep, looks like a feral Hampshire boar! An old one. As a kid in Voc Ag, I raised Hampshires one year. but they never weighed over 100 pounds before slaughter. I also raised Durocs and here is how a big Duroc feral sow looks: The wind was moving the hog around, so I held the tail to stabilize it. The hog was killed at Spartan Hunting Preserve in Grandview, TN. It is a fenced hunting area that the owner says his hogs are self-sustaining. I was invited by a friend of mine that hunted here a few years ago. To be quite honest, the animals are fed daily & the hunt was mostly kinda like “fish in a barrel”. I used to hunt hogs in Texas years ago, and it was more challenging. The owners of the preserve were very accommodating & the food and sleeping quarters were very good. Having said this, I probably would not go back unless I wanted to take an inexperienced hunter or kid that wanted a hog hunt. Feed a small pile of corn then pop 'em in the head with a .22. that's how we butcher hogs around here. Regardless of size. Glad you enjoyed it and hope you got the meat to take home. Raised a lot of hogs when a breeder boar got old enough that he started to slow down breeding sows he was just about worthless to us an surely not worth his feed bill. We would haul him to the livestock auction and get $25 or so for him. Same guy always bought them said he was putting them in his "wild boar hunting preserve" selling 2 day hunts for $400. Even after a couple cheap meals he turned a profit of $300 or more. Guy gave us his phone # and we would call him cutting out middleman paid $25 over 300# for any color combo boar but only $15 for a pink Yorkshire. Those boars had nuts like grapefruits and could barely waddle let alone run. I often wondered what the "hunter" thought when he took his first bite of those boars! | |||

Did you eat any of him? That preserve advertised, "great tasting wild boar meat cut to order". I am sure it was strong tasting maybe and it is a big maybe an uncut boar kept away from sows for a couple of months might make ok sausage with enough seasonings. | |||

Raised a lot of Hampshire, Yorkshire, Duroc and Landrace hogs for FFA and 4-H as a kid. Our biggest Duroc sow probably weighed 800 pounds. Our boar was about 750 at 3 years old. Some friends had a big domestic boar that was probably 8 or 9 and weighed closer to 1000, he had bottom tusk that stuck out 8 or 9 inches. | |||
