Good evening, gents. I've been watching several YouTube videos of hunts with what appear to be a cross of a Tikka and a Blaser with the Blaser type safety/cocking thumb piece and Tikka bolt gun looking receiver and a large ball bolt knob. Push-pull action.... I have a friend who is being transferred to Poland for 3 years for work. He is a hunter, for sure. I want to get some incentive to enjoy it. Can someone one point me in the right direction? Thanks, From Wyoming. John "It ain't lion hunting unless you get stitches." - John in WYO "It became aquatic, briefly." Blaser r8 - 300 win mag with swaro z6i 1-6 or new swaro z8i like optics. This is the choice for the guys who do the european driven boat circuit across Europe. There have been a few specially designed semi autos for driven boar. Sauer 303 ect. Three aimed quick shots on running game is what I have been told. I need to do one in Romania soon. Mike

Your friend will be served well with any kind of good bolt action rifle. Blaser, Tikka, Sako, Steyr etc. are all very popular. Best calibre for all around hunting in Europe is 30-06. If he can deal with the recoil then a 300 Mag. is ok too. A good scope in 2,5-10x50 or similar is just fine. If the focus is strictly on driven hunts then a 1-6, 1-8 is a good choice. I would go for two scopes, one for stalking and highseat hunting in bad light and second ine for driven hunts.

Are you sure what you describe as a Blaser/ Tikka hybrid is a straight pull? Sounds like a Sauer 404 turn bolt with an oversized bolt knob screwed on? https://www.sauer.de/en/produc...on-rifles/sauer-404/ The other possibility if it was a straight pull is a Merkel helix https://www.merkel-die-jagd.de...les/helix-speedster/ Both have a manual cocking thumb lever at the back just like a Blaser but have a conventional ejection port and mag set up. As with a Blaser they are easy to fit with return to zero QD mounts giving their owners the option of going from an Aimpoint if placed on a stand where shots are short, and keeping a 1-8x etc in a leather case I the rucksack for if and when they get placed on a stand where the shots are longer. The current trend for adjustable cheek pieces fitted at the factory is probably an indication that the traditional 8x56 for moonlight work is being replaced with NV and Thermal devices Formerly Gun Barrel Ecologist

All the wildboar fever guys use Merkel Helix and Sauer rifles for the most part. The helix is extremely fast to use.

I see mostly semi autos, I just take my K95, saves on ammo , I seem to end up with as many animals as anybody.

I found the rifle from the video I was describing as a cross between the Tikka/Blaser. Discovered it is not a push pull action. But it is fast, for sure. Sig-Sauer 404. Looks really sweet for what they are using it for. A Merkel Helix Speedster or a Heym SR30 or a Browing Maral.....man, there are lots of choices in the European market. I hunt quite a bit now in Germany. Many of the older generations still use a drilling / combination or double in 7x57r, 7x65r, 8x57jrs or 9.3x74r, but repeaters are now very much the norm. The Blaser r93 and r8 have a big following, along with other straight pulls. But normal bolt actions also widely used. Calibre 308 most popular, then 30-06, then 8x57, 9.3x62, 7x64. Scopes - for driven you want 1.5 or 2 at low end. A specialist wide angle 1-4x20 is ideal, since most hunters will also shoot pigs at night under the moon from a highseat then the 42, 50 and 56 mm scopes with a low bottom end mag also very popular. Mind you a couple of friends keep theirs on 6x, but they are very good shots with well fitting rifles. I use a double 7x65r with a 1-6x20 for driven and 6x42 for highseat work. Both scopes fit the same claw bases
