I had to share this from a friend. Only in the California wine country can you combine shrooming, kayaking, and hunting. His quote and pics:

"I was hunting/camping/shrooming at Lake Sonoma (public area).

While I was on my hands and knees, gathering chanterelles, I heard movement just below me in a ravine. Low and behold, it turned out to be a pig. I dropped the shrooms and picked up my bow.

Downhill, quartering away shot ~25 yards. I clipped the spine.

Dragging it down to the lake wasn’t bad since it was all downhill and I had help.

ButI had to sit in the back of my buddies kayak and had another friend tow my kayak with the hog strapped down on it."

I can just see that kayak coming in to the dock--would be great if there was a PETA picnic going on too.

Congrats!

Pork loin with with a mushroom sauce sounds great to me. All outings should end this way!

I spent 3 years in CA early in my Naval career. Unlike most Navy guys, I was stationed in the Bay Area instead of San Diego. My ship was homeported out of Concord Naval Weapon Station. Had a friend that lived in Napa and he knew a lot of the guys that worked at the vinyards.

We shot a lot of hogs off the grounds of some of the major vinyards. The hogs caused a lot of damage to the grape vines and the landscaping so it was pretty easy back then to get permission to shoot pigs. But they looked at you like you wanted to rape their daughters if you asked to hunt deer or quail. That was a damn shame because there are some huge blacktail bucks growing old on those vinyards and some huge coveys of quail too.

The hunting for hogs was good, but not good enought to convince me to return to that screwy state.

I've taken a bunch of pigs around lake Sanoma. Beautiful country and yes you cant even get to the lake without passing at least a dozen winerys.
Have'nt been in about ten years but I'll be there in two weeks I was'nt even going to bring a bow or gun but now this thread has me thinking.
I had some connections for privat ranches around the lake but I've lost contact with them.
I've heard that there is public ground near the lake but you have to take a boat to get there. Anyone Know?
