Baiting question.

Well, I think I may have found a place to hunt wild hogs on public land near me. It seems that there are a couple of game preserves surrounding the wildlife area that bought, according to the story, 1500 "Russian" boars for their hunts about 15 years ago. It seems that they had no clue how to provide proper fencing and they all got out. Imagine that. Now, I found that they are plentiful and huntable on the public land.

The question is, for the one or two days at a time that I may be able to hunt them, what would you use for bait to better your chances? Is the commercial stuff good, or a homw brew?

Thoughts?

The guy that traps hogs on our place always hangs a rag on top of the trap soaked in vanilla. He baits the trap with soured corn.

I've had good luck with corn and diesel fuel. Put about a quart of diesel on a five gallon bucket of corn. Easy, cheap, quick, and the deer and coons leave it alone.

I have had good luck with stale bakery products from bakery thrift shops normal price is 1$ for a shopping cart full. Top with 2 bottles of Patis fish sauce sold in oriental food shops. Total cost less than $5. Do not spill any of the fish sauce on your clothes or shoes!

I have tried cracked corn, cracked corn soaked in beer, pelleted regular pig chow and have far and away the best luck with the cheapest dry dog food i can find. i have gone so far as to lay a strip of each on the ground side by side and had pigs eat the dog food and leave the rest.

+1 Ol Roy from Walmart is perfect. The smell is so strong, they find it quickly. If not that, just use corn. Most of the other stuff is not worth the money. Remember, too, if you are going to eat the pigs, you're sort of eating the diesel soaked corn too if you use that stuff.

Some states don't allow baiting on public lands. Check your state's regulations.

Thanks guys! I speak Ol'Roy. I will try that first. I checked the regs and Missouri doesn't care how you get rid of them, as long as you do.

Just go out and buy the best feeder you can find.
make it as nice as you can, dress it up and fill it with the most costly food you can find.stand back and watch those hogs tear it up. dancing
It has worked at the deer lease,if you don't want them to tear it up they will.Good Luck

That would be much cheaper than Hog Wild, which is pretty much the same thing but $7 a bag!

Gotta be better than diesel. Yuck. I wouldn't do that even to a hog. That's just crude! Big Grin
