Well, I'm lucky enough to have friends that don't invite me to their pig hunts, or if they do, it happens to be when I can't make it but it seems that there are plenty of ranchers or landowners that have plenty of the feral type pigs running around on that they would be happy to let you chase down. I have never heard of a public land area with good pig hunting. I guess your best bet is to just ask around (try gun shops or feed stores) Most of the places I have heard of is in the Redding/Anderson/Cottonwood area in Northern CA. Wish I could be of more help, might give a call to Redding Fish & Game dept? 79

King City, Parkfield & Paso Robles. Carmel has so many they're becoming a traffic hazard though I don't know how you would go about hunting there.

trshep, First, what part of California do you live in or are interested in hunting in? PM me and I will do my best to steer you to some of the best wild boar(also Blacktail deer and turkey) hunting on public land you will ever see. Lawdog

Given the potential for a lethal charge and being gored by those razor sharp tusks, I'd suggest a 40mm Bofors with HE rounds, or at least a 20mm Oerliken! Acknowleding my relatively limited experience on hogs (I've taken 5 in California), I believe both of your rifles are fine- take the one you like best! The 7mm certainly has an edge- most northern California hunting (at least the spot and stalk variety) is done in relatively open cover (at least compared to northern New England). My shots ranged from @40 to @175 yards; you don't need a cannon, nor do you need the latest whizbang ultra-mag from Remingchester. Most adult hogs in California (or anywhere else, for that matter) are going to weigh somewhere between 140 lbs. (smallish sow) to around 275 lbs. (good sized boar). 300 pounders are few and far between, despite what some others may say (or perhaps they have some really good spots!). Try to get a copy of Bob Robb's book on hog nunting in California, it's a pretty good read and seems to be very low in BS.
