Just got back today from a weekend hunt in central Florida with my brother-in-law. We've hunted this spot a number of years before and have hunted on the property butting up to this one on numerous occassions. I managed to blood to of my weapons this weekend, which pleased me to no avail.

Anyhow, on Friday night after sitting in a stand for a couple of hours, my feeder failed to go off on two occassions, so I upped and went for a walk. It's important to note that there was smoke in the air from a nearby fire. The first feeder, nothing........the second feed1er, nothing.......the third feeder, movement! I'm about a hundred yards out and can clearly see a handful of hogs feeding. So I moved up a few yards, took a knee, put a hog in the crosshairs of my Ruger M77 in .338 win mag, and squeezed......bang-flop. 122 lbs.

Next morning I head to a stand at about 5:30. This morning is different. I've got a good breeze in my face and I'm down-wind of the feeder. 15 minutes after getting settled, a hog comes for a visit eating corn from the night before. A full 30 minutes before the feeder is cheduled to go off, a pair of sows show up and are joined by another group of hogs moments later. About a dozen hogs were entertaining me when the feeder went off next door like a dinner bell and they all up and left me with the memory of them. Now my feeder goes off and a 176 lb. barr hog comes for some hog crack (corn). One 250 grain Nosler Partition Gold later, and bang-flop........

Later in the day we went on a buggy/dog hunt. We beat the brush, chasing a number of hogs around the property.

My brother-in-law took a good sow running with his .45/70. Then we jumped this big red boar. My brother-in-law chased him in one direction with a dog while I stayed with the buggy. Our guide Chris announced that the hog had doubled back and was heading our way. I hopped down from the buggy, unholstered my Ruger SRH in .454 Casull and waited. He burst out of the palmetto and ran away from us at about 20 yards. He offered the perfect quartering away shot and one 400 grain hardcast bullet later and bang-flop. He was still breathing when I caught up to him, but another shot to the head ended that.

He went just a hair over 200 lbs. My brother-in-law took two hogs (a boar and a sow) with one shot of my .338 later in the day. I have a freezer full of meat and it was a great weekend offering a little bit of everything: stand hunting, spot and stalk, and hunting with dogs.

Hey Whitworth,

Congrats!! What a great weekend! I have one of those 200 lb. red boars on my wall. I like 'em too. Our Posse group did a "Big Boars with Big Bores" hunt a month ago up near Abilene, TX. Everyone was a shooting a 375 H&H and up.

Good Hunting,

Bob

Thanks guys! Bob, that's a really nice mount! That buggy is indeed badass. It'll just plow over anything -- just point it in the direction you want to go!

I normally use big-bores when I hog hunt as it adds an even more fun dimension, but I have to say that the .338 just flattens 'em! 250 Partition Golds at 2750 fps!

The red hog had some decent cutters, but not that big -- they don't really get that big out there because of the sand.

I just might have to take you up on your offer! Let us know how it goes! Are you going to use those 300 grain Hornady loads?

I believe so!

I am going to get camo'ed up from head to toe tomorrow and try to sit in a nearby bush to the feeder and I am sure it will be exciting!

I will be packing my video camera so I am going to try to get video of the hunt as well! Keep posted!

He did have some decent cutters. But they just don't get so big out there because of all of the sand in their diet -- grinds 'em down.

I talked to Jack a couple of days ago and he's working on it......what that translates to in terms of time, I haven't a clue! Anyhow, I talked to him about turning my SRH (the Casull) into a .500 JRH........yeah, I've got the bug real bad right now!

Where do you live 475?

Mahalo Late-Bloomer! I have a freezer full of sausage. That weekend my brother-in-law also took 3 hogs, so we have a lot of sausage! The red one was pretty big at a hair over 200 lbs. Your boar had tusks bigger than the 3 of these combined - LOL!
