Finally got around to building a trap--a circular one of cattle panels w/T-posts. Also have a rectangular box trap on the place. I started trapping when the numbers of pigs hitting the feeder got to 40 in 4 different sounders. In the past 6 weeks, I've shot/trapped 11 of them, all sows, but a 55-lb boar. Last week I had an unusual experience--drove into the river bottom and could see the trap from about 300 yds--and there was something big and black standing in it--thought it was a calf but all the calves on the place are light colored. Got closer and could see it was a medium-large boar, maybe 150-175, but never got the chance to ground-check him. The only weapon I used to carry was a 1911 in .22LR caliber--how much gun do you need for a pig in a trap-range is 8' or less? Well, as I drove toward the boar, noticed I also had a small one in the box--so I was smiling. Then the boar started to get a bit agitated, then he started to try and climb out--4' cattle panels with 4X8" openings. I was trying to get the pistola action ready and drive and not run into one of the big pecan trees, or drive off into one of the holes the pigs had rooted, and not being very successful, other than finally driving up to the trap. Stopped about 20 yds away, figuring I'd just lean across the toolbox and pop him. He thought different--stood on his hind legs, jumped and got his forelegs over the top of the panel, climbed out and ran off. I never got a shot off at him, but then a running boar at 60-150 yds with a .22 pistola isn't high probability of a hit or kill. Now the .22-250 always goes with me in addition to the pistol, and I load both of them at the first gate!!! An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool" | ||
