Well, today is the last day and I turned in my "tails" -- 16 of them so I'll get a check for $80. I asked the guy at the turn-in point how many had been turned in---in a bit over 3 weeks, 99 tails checked in. Guess the heat might be a factor in the low numbers---most folks are not gonna go out in the heat to shoot them. All of my 16 were trapped, so I didn't spend time on-stand.

However, my landowner in the next county over is crying so I'm headed out tonight with the rifle for a solo and the 12-ga if the big sounder shows. Taking an ice chest with cold drinks too--and I plan on staying late if necessary.

Hopefully they will extend the program as there is still $13,000+ remaining, and I plan on getting a significant share.

I wish other counties would get involved.

Knock on them while you can.

Do you all think some are simply not claiming the bounty?

No, I think the bounty is only being offered in certain counties, mainly in East Texas I believe, could be wrong on that.

While I think a bounty is a good idea, from what I've observed about members here, $5 a head wouldn't be the motivator for blasting hogs. It's gotta be the thrill.......

View it as Icing on the Cake.

Reality however is that AR members are not the Be All/End All as far as shooting or trapping hogs is concerned.

There are folks that have access to enough places in this part of Texas at least, that with the bounties, could make 50 to 100 dollars a night, and all they are out is a few shells a little gas and the time it takes to cut a pigs tail off.

In all honesty while things have changed in some ways concerning people poaching deer, many landowners really don't get all that put out with folks shooting pigs from the road, except for them leaving dead hogs laying around.

My sit last night was not productive---and checking the cam cards when I got home I could see they are now moving middle of the night---which I think is tied to the nearly full moon. Oh well, in a week or 10 days they'll be back on my schedule.

Good hunting. At least the bounty will help refill the ammo and put ice in the cooler.

Dustoffer, is the bounty program financed annually or is it a one-shot deal, so to speak? Just thinking that if this pool of money is regularly refreshed, and they aren't using it all up, the obvious thing would be to double the bounty and get more participation/eradication accomplished.

Bill--I don't know the answer to your question other than what was in the paper announcing the program. The county received $15,000 in "grant" money with the stipulation the money had to be spent by August 31st, giving hog killers only about 3-4 weeks to do the deeds.

I think it will depend on the results from this attempt.

Saw a report in the local paper that they have extended the bounty thru Dec 31st. Also, the final report was 300 or so tails turned in for the initial 3-wk period.

So, I have sometime to accumulate more pig tails.

Got 10 more tails in the freezer now. Sat last night but the thunder and lightning ran me off. Didn't want to sit in a metal tripod in a thunderstorm.
