Well, I need to find a new place to hunt hogs. My favorite spot in Florida where I have taken many hogs, is shutting its operation down at the end of July, and to tell you the truth, it breaks my heart. Anyhow, I live in northern Virginia, and need a spot that is fairly easily accessible, preferably somewhere in the southeast or thereabouts. The catch is that I don't want to pay outrageous trophy fees, and when I go out, I like to take multiple hogs. It wasn't uncommon for me to take 3 hogs on a weekend hunt and it didn't break the bank. It was $300.00 for a weekend which included two hogs with no size limitations, and additional hogs were $75.00.......very reasonable. Any suggestions??

Whitworth,

I have a call into a taxidermist from Fla.(incredibly great, honest guy who worked for us for a year, a while back). He said a large percentage of his clients bring in hogs, so I am hoping he will have some spots to direct you. I will give him the info above and will PM you when I hear from him.

Kind regards,
Mary

I have heard good things about Fin and Feather guide service. I have not hunted with him yet but I am booked for an Archery hunt in Sept.I believe the rate is $250/day incl. lodging and meals and one hog per day. So for $500 you can get a weekend hunt in with 2 hogs. i am sure he'll allow more you just have to call him yourself. The guides name is Rick Machin and you can reach him at 305-525-3130.

Marko - There is an outfit near where I live that is $150/hog. A lot of my friends go each weekend with their knives as they say that the knife/dog hunting is very exciting.

I am looking at a Deer Lease on Saturday, and the landowner says there are hogs out there. If I can get on it I will put a camper out there and let you and your brother out there whenever you can make it. Otherwise you and I are going to have to book a hunt somewhere!

Sounds great to me, Justin! We do need to book a hunt one of these days out your way. I have to blood my .475 and I have a .44 mag that I just started developing loads for that needs blooding as well.......it'll be a handgun hunting fest!

Marko:

It might be a little out of the way and too much $$$$$ for you, but I have had a lot of fun at the DRSS hunts at 4 K ranch in Brady, Texas.

For lodging, guide service, and three hogs, it is $650 fora arrive on Friday, depart on Monday hunt. Each additional hog is $50 each - no size limit.

We get a lot of hogs there!

You have to fly to DFW then drive about 3.5 to 4 hours to camp.

Just something for you to consider.

P.s., I haven't forgotten about getting a beer with you! I've just been so God damn busy with work and personal obligations.

Hey Paul! First things first, how's Ewan doing? I figured you were busy. We'll get together when things slow down a bit.

That is actually very reasonable in my opinion, price wise. It's those places that want $500.00 + for one hog that I am trying to avoid. I want to make a few kills when I go out next time. Have you gotten any big hogs there?

First, thank you for asking how Ewan is doing. He's great. Eyes are straight as an arrow. We go back for another check-up at the end of July. I'm working from home today as he has a head cold and momma is on a business trip.

Regarding the ranch, we get A LOT of hogs there.

Here is the largest one shot on the ranch by yours truly. It bottomed the 300 lb sccale out, but we estimated that it was probably around 315 to 320 lbs:

The second largest was shot by Mississippian in January 2007. That one weighed, if I remember correctly, 289 lbs:

Here is Brad Woodard, the wildlife manager at the 4K, with my hog - you get an idea of the size of its head:

Here are some random hogs on the ground at the cleaning shed:

Here is my first kill with my .577 NE double taken in January 2007 at 4K:

Most of the hogs we ake are in the upper 100s to lower 200s. Guys see a lot of hogs. Due to the size of the ranch (something like 60,000 acres) we do our hunting from blinds.

They have a lot of hogs. In the winter months, Matt, one of the guides, brings his dogs out and we can stick hogs if that is your thing.

Whitworth,

Heard from my friend in Florida today. Here is the info he has given me.

The first two are 5star according to his clients and other taxidermists and the last three are a bit more reasonable trophy fees.

Ross Hammock 1-352-447-0296 (5star outfit)

Tiger Island Outfitters 1-352-543-0851
(offering about the same as you were getting from your outfitter)

Bear Bridge Ranch 1-352-589-5196

Dixie Sportsman's Lodge 1-352-427-0233

Fla. Slam Outfitters 1-850-843-4211
($150.00 1st hog)

He can get more numbers from other taxidermists if you would like a few more.

Hope one of these works out for you.

Kind regards,
Mary
